LiveCode once used to be 'buy and get 1 year of free updates', that was up to RunRev 4.0
Since its called LiveCode, aka RunRev 4.5, that part got cut for anything but complete yet the update policy still is missing from the store no matter how long you search for it although it would by contract need to be available prior purchase at latest.

Question also would be if there is something similar to the old upgrade policy to get upgrades for the addons etc you offer for a given time period. Does the dev program subscription grant that?

I got an upgrade to 4.6 from the business runrev (which I owned for 2 yearly time slices), then I bought an upgrade to 5.0, so I really hope that 5.5 comes for free cause it definitely does not justify more than $20 / platform at total maximum with the nothing it adds from what mentioned outside the dev program so far.

Hi,

I won't buy in advance. I'll test first and if I like it I'll buy.

... omissis ...
If you look on the store, the only solution wich include an 'upgrade policy' is the 'LiveCode X.Y Complete' ...

... "For serious developers everywhere, the Master bundle. Get LiveCode Development Tools, every deployment option including Desktop, Web, Mobile and Server, a year of update releases and access to the LiveCode Developer Program. Save yourself almost $900 by getting these essential tools in one package, plus get the peace of mind of knowing you will automatically receive every new update we release. This is a subscription product, it will automatically renew annually for $749, you may cancel your subscription at any time."

... where you get your all versions for one year and you can continue to receive all the upgrades for 749US$ per year (... Developer Program Included).

It looks like we're translating serious developers into those who can afford $749 a year.

I'm glad there are LiveCode developers who can afford this.
Or LiveCode developers who work for a company who can afford this.

Maybe thats who RR are targeting. Those who can pay and pay and pay and pay.
Why not. If it works for them then good on um.

It's a shame I get excluded for not wanting (or geing able) to spend that kind of all or nothing amount.
And I'm pretty sure that does NOT include 'proper' support.
i.e. the kind of support all other Android/iPhone dev companies are offering.

Why can't we have a decent upgrade deal for LC Win/Mac with Android/iPhone/Server?
With proper expected support?

Patiently waiting.

Seems it has only been 6 or 7 months since the last paid upgrade. Please tell me that we are not moving to twice a year pay to play.

Gayasoft and Phiasco,

Did you pay half of the $749 per year for your last update?
Which would be about $375.

----

I can purchse my updates individually now for Desktops, Android, iPhone, for around $430.
Which is a little more than half the $749 per year everything bundle.

If I added the $200 for the iPhone Developer Program with its paid limited support that would total to $630.
Which I've researched and have convinced myself its not worth that kind of money me.
So another $120 would get me Linux and web to get me to $749. Neither of which I use.

Even if someone else was paying for upgrades I wouldn't recommend it.
Not at this price for this content thats still in its infancy.
And from a company who has no hesitation in continually finding ways to charge.

I'd certainly consider it at half that price.
But still feel like I'm paying too much.

Hi,

You don't need to pay twice a year for an update. If you want to make software for e.g. Windows and Android, then you can pay 338 euro for an update this year and update again in two years, if you think it is worth the money. That way, it costs you only 169 euro per year.

Kind regards,

Mark

That's not the point. You pay for a product, you should expect to receive bug fixes and non-point versions (5.0, 6.0, 7.0, etc) included.
I bought Live Code 4. I paid for 4.6. I paid for 5.0. I have received maybe two updates . . . EVER! And, of course, more options to pay more money.

Now, the academies are wonderful and I did 'earn' my deployment upgrades, so that is a PLUS and has kept me a Live Code user or I would have jumped ship a while ago. However, like everyone else, I start Live Code and it immediately tells me through a pop up that my Live Code version is out of date (I have 5.0.2) - clicking it takes me to the store where I am asked to spend $200. I have held off due to principle - spending even more money when I should be receiving these fixes as included with my original purchase - it's just wrong. All of my other software I buy - including languages - does NOT do this to me. Some are free updates for life and large companies like Embarcadero release updates through my software and I am NEVER asked to buy anything more (I spent enough).

Maybe i'm just a small potato and the bigger companies don't mind this, but I would like to think that the majority of the Live Code users are indeed small potato users and we are just being stepped on in favor of the larger companies. Not very nice. On top of everything else, some of these deployment modules are far from functional - they are a WIP and we are funding their development - but when will it all end??? I have attempted to deploy to android - no go - does not work for me at all on phones and tablets. The best I have been able to deploy properly is a hello world example and a simple form with a button - nothing else. I cannot deploy to IOS since I am not a developer and really don't want to spend the $$$ till I have something developed and not just a test to see if it works. I don't have a linux distro, so I cannot deploy that and test it (though it's free, so no real excuse), and web deployment does not work (maybe 50% works). That leaves PC and Mac, which I can deploy to and does work. So, should I keep spending all this money when I can go to another cross-platform development language and not have to deal with this BARAGE of spend spend spend.

My skin is wearing thin and I may have to bite the bullet and choose another language that I know won't cost me a fortune to develop in.

It's a quandry. I like Live Code. I don't love it, but I do like it. I am beginning to code in other languages that are about as easy to learn, though a little less english-like. Some of them are . . . gasp . . . FREE. Perhaps I should just go that route.

Not sure anymore.

Mike

+1
100%
I'll continue to "skip this version"
until all the features I'm looking for are available
and I'm convinced its value for money.

I've been deploying to Android since it was first supported, so there must be something else going on. These forums would be a good place to ask about any issues you're having. I have a commercial Android product, built with 5.0.2, in both the Amazon App Store and the Android Market. So far there have been no reports of problems from any of my customers. It was tested on phones and tablets both.

I'm pretty sure if you post here, we can help you figure out what's wrong. I know it works.

Hi Mike,

If you don't pay for upgrades, then you can't expect a "free" update. If you do get one, then it is only a favour and token of good will from RunRev's side. You have paid for the product in its current state and not for any future bug fixes. Unless you are willing to pay for the updates, you can only test the current version of LiveCode and buy it if you like it or leave it alone if you don't like it. Nonetheless, I don't intend to pay the full amount for another update within one year. Maybe not even within two years. I'm with you on that.

I also need to remark that RunRev is doing extremely difficult about trial versions. Some time ago, I asked for a trial version and I was bluntly told "we can't do that". Up to that point, RunRev was very nice and friendly, but I still think they should allow me to download as many trial versions as I need to convince myself that the product is good enough to buy. When RunRev makes it impossible to test the product, thenI suppose you're entitled to a perfect product without bugs and infinite updates.

Perhaps I should also include that I bought an Enterprise license with the release of 4.0 and all I got after that was a dp of 4.5. I paid for updates but never got them because the final release of 4.5 was a few weeks after my Enterprise license expired.

Kind regards,

If they allowed people to keep using time-limited trials indefinitely, what would be the incentive to buy?
