Archived versions Livecode Community Edition

Post by Simon Knight » Thu Oct 28, 2021 10:03 am

Hi,

I have never used the community edition but would like to know if it will meet my needs which have changed recently. Simply I have the option of continuing with an indy subscription, using the new £10 per month two platform subscription or using an archived version of the community edition.

What are the limitations of the community edition when building a standalone?

best wishes

- Community does not support password protected stacks. So in case you want to use 3rd party libraries or plugins that were password protected, you will not be able to use those anymore.
- And you cannot password your stacks yourselve.
- You will not be able to create iOS standalones according to Apple's licensing.
- If you want to distribute your app, even if it's free, then you have also to distribute the source code.

Currently you will have to stay with Community LC 9.6.3. That's the latest version that was built by Livecode Ltd. and that is available.

There is a group of developers who want to maintain the Community version in future, but under an other name.

One thing about the 10GBP subscription... Please keep in mind, that your created standalones will only run as long as your subscription is valid. If you ever cancel your subscription, then the created standalones will not run anymore. Not really a big deal, if you are planning to keep your subscription current, but i thought i should mention it.

My personal feeling re this is that, at present at least,
the Community versions are good for doing one's development with.

If one, subsequently, feels ready to release one's "creation" into the wild,
and wishes to protects one's code, then you have to consider if you want to spend
the necessary money to enjoy that sort of security.

By "at present at least" I mean that, probably, sooner rather than later
if you are developing for contemporary and upcoming Macintosh models
there will be a moment at which ARM-based Macintosh machines will no longer
run LC standalones that are not hived off using the upcoming Mac ARM engine,
which will. obviously, only be available to people who pay for current versions of
LiveCode.

BUT: this is ONLY my personal feeling and my experience re releasing software that
actually brings some revenue is extremely limited.

Thanks for your prompt and helpful reply.

My programming horizon has shrunk to mostly creating useful tools to help me manage my image library. I have not created anything for mobile or another OS for years so I am questioning if there is much sense in maintaining my Indy subscription even if at todays prices it is a steal.

Thanks for the heads up about the restriction placed on the subscription service which I find odd from a business sense and is the principle reason why I am looking elsewhere. If I create an application I think I should at least be able to use it free of charge even if I am not allowed to sell it.

Looking to the future I suspect that change to the new Apple M1 chip will eventually cause problems for the community edition once Apple pull the plug on the Rosetta2. Ah Richmonds post has just been added.

I may well pay for an additional year of Indy to give me time to fully assess my needs and to see how the new pricing structure beds in.
