Nothing new since 9.5.1 ?

Post by bangkok » Sun Mar 08, 2020 11:04 am

LC 9.5.1 has been published on december 16... Almost 3 months ago.

Since then, nothing new to put on our plate.

9.6 is still in DP2.

I'm wondering if LC is too focused on...LCFM.

There is still work to be done on desktop and... Android.

Wow!! You know, I generally don't consider myself to be the most patient person on the planet, but I really have to take a back seat to that one hahah

Mmm, I don't have a desire for "new, new, now, now" but would rather focus on fixing what needs to be fixed already, and ensuring that what new releases come are robust and well tested. Unless I am waiting on a fix, then I want that fix to be released "now, now" of course. You can't please me all the time, let alone please all the people all the time.

Well... me too ! I consider myself rather... "laid-back".
;-)

But I see on bugzilla :

19 bugs "awaiting release"
89 bugs "awaiting merge"

I do not even seek new functions... but bug fixes are good. Still lot of cleaning to do on Android (barcode scanner widget for instance, etc.)

Yah, no kidding. I've always thought the release schedule was far too fast already since it went open source.

Consider this, if you will.

From vers. 6.0.0 to 7.0.0, there were 27 releases, of which 5 were major releases, in a little more than 1 year.
  1. 6.0.0 Stable Release Date - 10 April 2013
  2. 7.0.0 Stable Release Date - 23 October 2014
Compare that to the Commercial releases prior to that....
1. LiveCode 4.5 - 2010-09-18
2. LiveCode 5.5.5 - 2013-05-29

I think the former is a more normal release schedule than the later set, but that is probably just me :D

I'm pragmatic.

The "major releases" and the "numbering"... are relative.

I mean if it pleases the mothership to increment +1 as "major release" any bug fixed... why not ?

Livecode would be now version 38738983963673. :D

I do not mind, frankly.

But again, bug fixes, if they are done... just publish them. Common sense.

From my perspective : bug fixes should be real time.... only "new functions" should be part of "major release".

Personally, rather like the simplified view of evolution: an ascension from the unconscious ignorance
of the Amoeba to the "crowning glory" of humanity: which is, at best just a fable demonstrating Man's hubris,
I'd far rather LiveCode stopped "popping out new versions on a frequent basis" and retrenched to some
point in LiveCode's history and sorted out ALL the outstanding bugs.

About 5% of the DNA in European people (that means "white" people) comes from Neanderthal men, not
Homo Sapiens . . . Great! Mixed and interesting.

I think you've confused 'major' and 'minor' releases my friend, minor updates are X.x+.1, major releases are X+.1.x. Also, if you read the release notes, you will I think see even the minor releases are more than just "any bug fixed".

However, as Richard points out so often, if you want the fixes faster, and have the latest bleeding edge, switch to the DP section releases, as that is apparently where they get worked out / on :)
