standalone applications

Hi All,
Have read several posts on standalone, but none has answered my basic query on how this fits in the distribution of my work.
I plan to provide the application on USB memory sticks and hope that the application should run from the memory stick and not have to be installed on the end user machine. This is planned as portability for the application since the users will be more likely to use internet cafe's to access computer machines. Is my understanding right on this or is an installation actually required?
