I said something eerily similar somewhere else in response to one of (the other) Keith's posts. I thought they were rather good for several reasons,
. they were not overly long
. they were not overly complicated
. they would give a beginner a good starting point to see what was possible with very simple code, and several of them were a good basis for much more involved projects.

Seriously though, it's a perennially challenging thing for a commissioning editor: finding someone who's an expert in a topic AND who can communicate well. I've spent my working career on being the latter. I'm no true LC expert but I've been xTalking since 1989 (HC, SC, Rev/LC) and I've learned enough to get people started. I hope I get a chance to do something like this again soon.

That makes me thing of universities stuffed full of Profs doing research who are completely unable to get anything of what they do across to their undergraduates.
