I said something eerily similar somewhere else in response to one of (the other) Keith's posts. I've used them with some of my students.
. they were not overly long
. they were not overly complicated
. they would give a beginner a good starting point to see what was possible with very simple code, and several of them were a good basis for much more involved projects.
