RevWeb for linux platform ?
Hello all,
Can someone of Runrev tell us when revWeb will be available on linux. And what is the problem ?
Revolution for the web is amazing but it's a real big problem to not have a linux release.
Will it be available one day and is it possible to know when (even if it is just an idea) ?
Thanks for your help.
Dominique.

Re: RevWeb for linux platform ?
what is revweb?
If it's the rev web plugin, then there's no announcement, and there will probably not be one in the mid to long term (my guess).
If it's the on-rev web scripting, then probably within the year.
If your problem is that you want to use Rev on a server, then you can use the 4.0 engine as cgi (if you can't find it, mail support so they can explain where to find it).

Re: RevWeb for linux platform ?
Hello,
Thanks for your answer.
Yes i was talking about the rev web plugin. I know I'm not always clear but I'm french and my english is not always very good !
I don't understand why nobody can't tell when this plugin will be available. Is there a very big issue with Linux ?
In my opinion this is not good. This plugin will never work if all platforms are not there.
Thanks again for your help.
Dominique.

Re: RevWeb for linux platform ?
The challenge with Linux is that it's debatable if it has much more than 1% of desktop market share (see http://itmanagement.earthweb.com/osrc/a ... ercent.htm - and why doesn't this form support the BBCode URL tag?), and of that small number many if not most users are unaccustomed to paying for software. It's a good place to be for services, and a difficult place to move into if you sell software.
Yet in spite of the relatively low returns likely from the Linux world, it costs about as much for them to support as do Win and Mac, where they make much more money.
I love Ubuntu (and recently added their Netbook Remix to my lineup as well), and I think there are some good opportunities in the Linux space for what Rev provides, esp. in education and other large orgs where rapid vertical app development needs fit Rev nicely.
But all things considered, I understand why it takes a back seat to making sure the Mac and Win implementations are rock solid first.
Hopefully it won't be much longer. My netbook is aching for some revlets.

Re: RevWeb for linux platform ?
You are right Richard. Linux has a very small market but it's growing. In France, some administrations are working with Linux and in the CNRS where I am working Linux is very used.
My problem is, in fact, just to know when it will be available (and maybe also why it is hard to havec this plugin for Linux). In the runrev web site, there are many pages where we can read Linux is supported by runrev for this plugin :
- http://revmedia.runrev.com/frequently-a ... e-my-work/
- http://revmedia.runrev.com/beginners-gu ... e-compare/
But, again, I want to say that revolution is really good and pleasant to work with.

Re: RevWeb for linux platform ?
Oh, I hear you, Dominique. In fact, I've been giving a lot of though to the "sweet spot" for Rev's Linux engine, and I'm increasingly of the opinion that there's a strong intersection of needs and capabilities in the market segments Rev is best suited for, like EDU, internal apps for orgs, etc.
The governments of Brazil, India, Berlin and others have standardized on Linux, and the US Army is the largest organization to have adopted it in terms of number of desktops. There's a lot happening in that space, and over time a lot of the FUD about what is and isn't open source and when it does and doesn't matter is beginning to go away, shedding old prejudices which open up new opportunities for us Rev folk.
I hope RunRev recognizes the benefits of investing in Linux now, while the competition there is still relatively weak. As the world's fastest-growing OS, this opportunity won't last forever.

Re: RevWeb for linux platform ?
I still do agree with you.
But I still not understand why nobody of runrev can tell us where they are with this plugin for Linux ?
In different pages of runrev's website they are saying this plugin works on all platforms (window, linux and mac).
I will wait but it's not a good thing for me.
Best regards.
Dominique.
