Database with accents and diacritics
Hi,
I would like to know if there is someone who uses a database in which accented words or diacritics are stored. They look good in LiveCode and you can search for these types of words and find them. I've been spending about three weeks on it, not wanting to lose time from now, if it's not possible to get what I need.
Looking over the Internet most of the solutions are having duplicate text fields. One with the accents and the other without the accents and do the search for the latter. It does not work for me
There is a solution that works for me, but I want to leave FileMaker and I have to use it as a database to change it. With the new version of FileMaker the minimum number of licenses is 5 and you also have the server. The server is no longer sold individually, a FileMakerPro Advanced license costs 696.96 € VAT incl. I could make it serve as a server, no problem activating ODBC and JDBC, but I find it expensive to use it only as a server.
I know I'm a bit heavy with the theme of accents and diacritics, I'm not lucky enough to use a language that does not use them. And I have to be very clear to continue with LiveCode
If someone has been able to solve it and wants to share it?
Regards,
Carles

Re: Database with accents and diacritics
Can you post a list of the different accented words or diacritics you are speaking of...perhaps a list of fake names and such that are similar to what you would use?
I am working on a database right now and can check to see if they give me any problems.

Here you have the relationship. You can see all the possible combinations from 7 to 10.

Re: Database with accents and diacritics
I was able to post and search with no problems.
I am using Livecode Community Edition 9 for the front-end, and a remote server with MariaDB, Apache2, anbd Livecode Community Edition Server 9.
I url-encode everything before sending it to my remote server. I did not have to make any changes to my existing code to get your special characters to work. I just typed them in and they sent to the database with no issues.

Re: Database with accents and diacritics
Hi ghettocottage
There would be some way to know the type of character and collation of the server, I suppose that with PhpMyAdmin you can see how this database is defined?
I have XAMPP, locally, with MariaDB and I have not managed to find the right combination. Will not Livecode Community Edition Server 9 have anything to do with it?
Thank you very much for your interest

Re: Database with accents and diacritics
what happens if you use phpMyadmin to enter the same data into the database? Are the results the same? ..or are you only getting those results when you use Livecode to send data to the database?
Re: Database with accents and diacritics
The data I enter directly with PhpMyAdmin, I leave from the base that the client can already have his data and open that show it. I will test the other way, this afternoon or tomorrow

Re: Database with accents and diacritics
Solved!. Replica of a post on stackoverflow.com by Anthony Taylor https://stackoverflow.com/users/1770210/anthony-taylor
Thank you ghettocottage, without your answers I would not have gotten it,
Carles
The problems with the accents and the searches were finished, checked. I will continue deepening with LiveCode.Turns out MariaDB has a bug which turns the database formating to latin1 intead of utf8
To correct for this you must go to /etc/my.cnf remove all instances of
default-character-set=utf8
find title "mysqld" in my.cnf and put under it
init_connect='SET collation_connection = utf8_unicode_ci'
init_connect='SET NAMES utf8'
character-set-server=utf8
collation-server=utf8_unicode_ci
skip-character-set-client-handshake
and save.
Then restart mariadb.

Hi Carles,
Looks like this MariaDB configuration file has many copies
Did you modify each copy or only one?
If you modified only one configuration file, then
Which one?
