One alternative if is use a cheaper Windows box instead - and brand new. For example: https://www.geekom.co.uk/geekom-mini-it ... 9wQAvD_BwE they have much cheaper models as well.

If I’m honest, while I am a Mac user since 1987 and MacOS remains my preference, Win 11 is increasingly Mac-like and this would be much more future proof than a 2016 iMac (these are likely to be declared “obsolete” in a year or two and you won’t be able to further upgrade MacOS)… although admittedly a win box is not as nice ;)

Oh, if I am going for something cheap then I won't have to buy anything at all as my late Dad's 2000 something Toshiba 32-bit laptop runs Debian 12 with XFCE and the last LC Community edition with no obvious problems beyond . . .

1. Slow.

2. Gets it knickers in a twist when trying to build Mac 64-bit standalones.

3. As soon as one connects an external, decent-sized monitor, it grinds to a speed which is too slow for anything at all.

As to 'obsolete': at 61 years old I am spending my spare time embroidering a protest banner with the word 'ageist' in the middle of it . . . 8)

Toujours gaie!

Obviously I will now be aiming for a slightly fancier model . . .

Not sure if that’s a response to my post - that link I posted is for a latest generation intel i7 with good amount of RAM/adequate drive space etc and ships with latest Windows OS. it doesn’t come with a monitor which is an extra expense unless u already have one. But the box itself would be 100-200 Lev cheaper that the 7-year old iMac. And brand new.

Also to be clear “obsolete” is a term Apple applies to their machines that are no longer supported and cannot be upgraded. I was peeved when my 2016 MBP was declared obsolete last year… so I’d have concerns about buying the iMac you’re proposing…
Nothing to do with “ageism”…

There was a joke in there somewhere. 8)

To be honest, I do not like Windows at all.

AND; in spite of your link [to somewhere in Great Britain], I stay in the European Union, so would have to pay import tax.

Possibly for daft reasons: but, then, I don't like mushrooms or milk puddings either.

Indeed they do.

BUT, I do not require a machine that CAN be upgraded or is 'supported' by Apple. I need a machine that can do a few things on a list I have which none of my current machines can manage. That machine will 'do' me for a good 5-7 years from now as most of my target machines are Macs of that or earlier specs, or a variety of ill-assorted 'boxes' running a variety of Linux distros.

As my Devawriter Pro (my main thing) is FREE, if any one gets 'all peeved' that it will not run on a Mac ARM processor they can send me an ARM Mac or they can work out how to build a Mac ARM program from my [open source] code themselves.

Children in my school still go 'Wow!' and 'Gosh!' when they see my Polycarbonate PPC and Intel iMacs from 2005-6. :?

The machine came with MacOS 10.13 "High Sierra", but I am bumping it up to MacOS 12 "Monterey.

Being my usual, naive, self, I tried to get it onto the 5G Wifi in my house . . . but, of course, no joy,
so just the 'bog normal' [fairly fast anyway] Wifi.

Wow: rummaging around in what my wife charmingly call, "One of your buckets of crap." I found 2 of these things that my younger son lobbed at me saying, "Dad, bung those in one of your buckets of crap."

And, Hey-Presto: owing to the fact that my wife and 2 sons understand me perfectly, I can connect 2 extra monitors to my new beast should I wish to.
