@Simon a bit surprised as i hadn’t realized you were in a thread I had started.
I haven’t revisited this issue since my last post.
But to answer your question, no I was only reading in image data for each row displayed.
The row template being very plain and the only image switching was to do with setting visible true or false.
After I had tracked my bug to the datagridlibrary, I commented out the offending line until,there was a release with the fix included.

Thanks for your reply, I killed my own datagrid and found your post by searching for the error message. As you say "'put true into grevdevelopment' " is the way to go.
