Dicky Downloads?

Post by richmond62 » Mon Dec 16, 2019 7:56 pm

As some of you may know, I'm trying to get some Pensioners "up and doing" right now, but there is one woman who
seems unable to download LiveCode to get started.

I would be glad of any ideas about how to sort this out.

LC Ltd uses the Cloudflare CDN for downloads, and a few of us have encountered unusually long download times. It seems related to IP ranges, according to a set of rules known only to Cloudflare.

If that's indeed what's happening in this case, it may be useful to send a note about this to support AT livecode.com. They've been able to tune the CDN before, and may be able to reduce instances like this one.

Probably because that OP on the Pensioners thing lives in the United Kingdom where everything is state-regulated,
censored and throttled. Download times are awful and limited in a way I fail to understand.

I tried to download 9.5.1 from LC itself. The progress bars snailed along maddeningly. Halfway through I stopped and went to the actual page of all downloads, and the process took 40 seconds.

I pointed the OP on the Pensioners thing to the actual page of all downloads.

Hi,
when I recently downloaded from http://downloads.livecode.com/livecode, my Waterfox browser on Win 10 behaved just as described:
- no information about the final size of the download
- no finishing of the download ("downloaded size" remains at final size, but DL doesn't end)

The DownThemAll! addon worked flawlessly, though.
Just tried 9.5.1 in Edge - final size of the download isn't shown. But it finishes, at least.

So CloudFlare doesn't behave like it should.
The lady in the OP may use a download manager - there's a FreeDownloadManager for Mac; for Win it works well, but I have no idea about the Mac version.

Have fun!
All code published by me here was created with Community Editions of LC (thus is GPLv3).
If you use it in closed source projects, or for the Apple AppStore, or with XCode
you'll violate some license terms - read your relevant EULAs & Licenses!

That does seem to be the case. When you experience these download delays, it's helpful to let the team know with an email to support AT livecode.com so they can further tune the CDN. It's helpful to their efforts to include your IP address in that communication.

As a mildly amusing side note, last year when I encountered severe delays in those downloads I discovered that if I shell into one of my servers in a different geographic region and download there with wget, they come in quickly. And once on that server, I can then grab them quickly from my server to my workstation here in my office.

Of course that's a silly workaround, offered more for amusement than guidance. But if nothing else it helped pin down some of the issues with the CDN, so it was at least somewhat helpful beyond cutting my download times by 80%.

"guidance"

Trying to give guidance to a retired lady "of a certain age" on the other side of Europe is both simpler
than what you suggest and a whole lot more difficult.

Why not just download it yourself and deliver it to her?

How would I deliver a 600+ MB download to a woman in Scotland from Bulgaria?
