2.7.4 installer

Post by revuser1 » Fri Aug 31, 2007 9:32 am

I seem to have misplaced the installer for my licensed copy of Studio 2.7.4 (purchased Dec 2006). Is there an archive somewhere on the site which will allow me to redownload this installer? Thanks in advance.

Hi,

You can still download these from our website, the two appropriate links are:

http://developer.runrev.com/components/ ... 74Full.exe
http://developer.runrev.com/components/ ... 74Full.dmg

Hope this helps.

The public FTP site at ftp://ftp.runrev.com/pub/revolution/dow ... ributions/ shows:

2.0
2.1.2
2.1
2.2
2.2.1
2.5
2.5.1
2.6
2.6.1
2.7
2.7.1

I don't know why 2.8 and 2.8.1 are missing. Maybe someone from RunRev can clarify.

Hi Richard,

I know about the FTP server. Usually, people who ask me where to find the distribution for which they have a license, need a more recent distribution. Most of the time, they need a copy on Sunday or in the middle of the night and always immediately, when Rev support is not available. Of course, it would be sufficient if the FTP server were simply updated to include all versions of Revolution.

Best,

Mark

I tend to avoid listing where to download older versions due to potential software piracy with the older versions usually having regs available in the wild. If you know them for sure to be a reg'd user, fine, but otherwise, let them wait to get in contact with support.

Garrett,

If your product sufferc from piracy, try protecting your software better, but don't make your actual, honest clients a victim of something they have nothing to do with.

Mark,

Ok, I guess we'll have to go over this then...... First, I was merely trying to make a suggestion.... Second, I did not mean that I have a problem with any software of mine being pirated(i'm such a small fish in the software world anyway)... Third, you can add the top of the line, latest technology, 2 million bit encryption, explodes in your face if you use a memory debugger, and your software will still be cracked.

Software companies have gone out of business due to software piracy. Having to wait 1 day for a temporary link to an older version is not at all unreasonable and a majority of your clients will not even blink an eye at that. To imply that doing this to protect yourself as wells as your clients turns your clients into victims is completely absurd and insane. In fact, it not only helps protect your company, but that of your clients as well. If you begin to lose revenues due to software piracy, you'll likely increase your prices in an attempt to make up the potential losses, which means, your clients end up a victim after all, since they are now having to pay more to make up for it. Now do you think your clients would prefer paying another $100 USD for their next update, or initial purchase, or wait 1 day for a temporary link for an older version that they misplaced?

Now we could go round and round on the argument that those who pirate software would never likely buy the software anyway, but the truth is, many would've purchased, but instead ran across an older version and found a crack for it.... So they know it's wrong but don't see the harm in it and eventually get comfortable in that situation and never purchase. Had they not found both the older version and the crack that corresponds to it, they would've likely downloaded the trial and eventually purchased, or held out until they could purchase.

I personally know this from experience myself. I aided a software developer of another programming language for several years, and in fact, helped run support for him. We found years go that it was better to remove all outdated versions from the internet. Users who did not update and required a download of their older version simply emailed us and within a day they received a download link... And not once in the years of doing this did a single client complain or state that they felt like a victim. In fact, we would get replies with a thank you from them because they were sure that they'd never be able to get their older version since it's no longer supported.

In working with the above, we also approached users on the forums that we found to be using the software illegally/pirated, and usually talked to them to find out why they chose to do that instead of using the trial and then purchasing. About half of the time we got the response that they wanted to be able to try the software unhindered by trial restrictions and that they meant to purchase, but simply kept putting it off... Of those, most purchased... Yes, we turned illegal users into legal users. Some of the other responses were that they just could not afford the software and no chance in their near future of being able to afford the software. Of those, we made some of them work for us until their work equaled the amount of a registration. Those who could not were of course banned from the forums. Of the rest of the reasons, they were those who there just would be no help for, those that just do not care and do it for selfish reasons or whatever ignorant reasons they may have.

Anyway..... Basically, making your clients wait 1 day does not alienate them, make them a victim or cause them any inconveniences that they did not already cause themselves, to which, they are not going to blame the company, nor blame the company for not having a publicly available download link for their older version.

If you have no experience or knowledge with any of the above, you should seriously verse yourself as soon as possible if you are in the business of selling software. Read up on the security sites, keep track of and watch the crack sites.

If after reading the above you still disagree with me, then that's fine. You have your opinion, and maybe experience also, and I have my opinion and experience also.

Hi Garret,

I have different experiences and it just happens that people ask me where to download an older version of Revolution if they don't get a reply from RunRev Ltd immediately. Where you believe that clients can wait, the people I work with don't agree.

Best,
