New Pricing?

Post by AndyP » Mon Mar 16, 2015 8:03 am

I see on the pricing page that all is now by monthly subscription.

http://livecode.com/products/livecode-platform/pricing/

I had not seen any previous notice of this change.

Was it announced in the Unconference presentation?

The subscription change for Commercial went into effect when LiveCode first went open source about two years ago.

Only the Commercial Edition is by subscription. The Community Edition can be used free of charge as long as distribution of derivative works is done according to the terms of the GPL v3 which governs that edition.

For a review of different scenarios under which Commercial and Community editions may be a good fit, see the question "Can you give me some examples of where I do and don’t need a commercial license?" in Section 12 of this FAQ:

Hi Richard,

the question is, is the commercial version now ONLY available via a MONTHLY subscription?
I really would not like this, I always used the "Indy" license, which is in fact a yearly subscription in the end. 8)

Thanks for the clarification, Klaus. It wasn't immediately clear to me whether the focus of the OP was the subscription itself or merely its duration.

My work as Community Manager is as an advocate for opportunities and concerns with the open source Community edition, so I can only refer requests about pricing of the Commercial edition to the folks at RunRev Ltd.

Having contributed to the Kickstarter campaign at a level that offered a lifetime license, I haven't paid much attention to pricing on the Commercial edition. Is the monthly fee much higher per year than the previous annual licensing fee?

Given that we can develop using the Community Edition and only need a Commercial proprietary license when deploying a proprietary app, does the change from annual to monthly make much of a difference to the developer's bottom line? That is, if I spend 11 months making an app and deploy it in the 12th month, it would seem I'm saving money with a monthly subscription, no?

I am also usually hesitant to embrace the idea of software subscriptions as well, but I think here it is a good fit. For me, the Community Edition would work flawlessly for everything I use LiveCode for. However, being a huge fan of LiveCode, I would like to support them as much as possible. The monthly subscription option (which ends up being slightly more per year than a regular yearly license) is easier for me, and it includes on-rev hosting, as well as a few other perks that are not usually included in the yearly license. I suspect that there are quite a few hobbyist developers who would like to support LiveCode, but might find it hard to justify plunking down $300 for a yearly license. While the $99 membership option is great, I think the monthly option is even better as it includes hosting and access to a server environment that is set up and ready to go, which lowers the barrier to experimenting with LiveCode's server side scripting functionality significantly. Seeing as my Commercial License was set to expire two days after this announcement, picking the monthly option was an easy choice for me. :D

I also believe that I read on the site that the yearly license would still be available, or maybe it was said during the announcement, so hopefully there are enough options to keep everyone happy!

Click on the "buy" button -- then you have options for monthly or yearly purchases.
I never, and never will, purchase software on a monthly basis.

Good to see the yearly subscriptions have not been scrapped.

So I've looked and cannot find the answer already posted. I have the following subscription:

Combined Indy All Platform - Funding Yearly Subscription
Total $499.00 Yearly
Next Payment Date 7th Aug 2015

I did this to get access to the year of html5 when it gets released instead of the commercial licesne I had the year before that came with the first summer school. Unfortunately what I missed was that I lost accees to the Academies in the process. When I asked this question a couple of weeks ago I was told I could purchase the Members license for $99 to get the Academies back.

NOW for $29 a month I get everything I was getting now AND the Academies? Can I change my license and prorate the rest of my subscription for the new monthly rate? This would give me several extra months as the rates are no cheaper?

What happens when html5 gets released? What access will I have for the additional year. Will I ONLY be able to compile into html5 at this time without purchasing *another* license at the same time?

Kind of confused here and would really like the Academies access back without double paying for access I already have.

Help? Clarification? Maybe a general Addition to the FAQ page that covers all existing licensing, kickstartes, etc and how they work with the transition to the new license plan?
