Power Button can't be grouped?

Post by bbalmerTotalFluency » Sat Nov 19, 2022 12:00 pm

Hi:

Loving the new widgets from the summer sale. Enjoying the power button BUT the other day I was trying to group 3 of them together, in the way one does with normal buttons and it appears I can't do that. Then I noticed they don't necessarily possess and property that would allow that. But in case I am being especially dim today - can they be grouped and if so how? If they can't, is that deliberate? Is there something good about that? Or are they still in development.

Would also like to comment that I have been enjoying the polygrid. I find it to be a lot less heavyweight than using the datagrid, yet faster.

Hm, no problems here, just selected the three buttons and then grouped them!?
Or did I misunderstand you?

Huh? And what property could that be? I don't know about such a property.

I sometimes fail to notice the “select grouped” is selected in the menubar which causes a fail if trying to group stuff. Worth just making sure that’s off!

What do you mean? The state of that button has no effect on the ability to group controls. It only determines whether individual controls within a group, or the group itself is selected with the pointer tool

Craig.

I didn’t realise I had to spell it out.

So:
The effect of “select grouped” is that you can’t see groups.
That is the point of it.
With it on, you select objects in a group directly, without having to “edit group” - in fact with this on, you will never see the group.

Therefore you’ll keep trying to group objects that are already grouped and you may get an error, but at the very least it will appear that the objects aren’t grouped.

I hope that makes sense.

Stam.

As Klaus says, AHA.

Now at least, since you spelled it out, I see what you were actually saying.

But I would say your "a fail if trying to group stuff" did not quite adequately specify that particular scenario.

Not that I don't need things spelled out, of course.

I wrote “causes a fail” because the “group” button may be dimmed out or the machine may bleep at me when I try. So it seems like it doesn’t work (“ungroup” has same issues).

Not a real fail of course, just a side effect of having this setting on.

Anyway hopefully that helped with your problem?

It's also possible to select groups from the app browser (which I use) or, I assume, from the project browser (which I don't) if you don't want to worry about the toolbar button. That's what I usually do.

Jacque.

Stam and I ran into trouble because of my reading of his post.

Reading yours, are you saying that you can grab a child control of a group and group it with a separate "not-in-that-group" control using the app browser?

No, I'm just saying that if the Select Grouped Controls button is on, you can select the group(s) from one of the browsers instead. That way I don't have to worry about the state of the toolbar button, which I rarely change and largely ignore.

The grouping requirements don't change, it's just a different way to do selections.

Jacque.

OK, that makes sense.
