Not solved, but at least it removes one variable since we can say the problem is not in the remoteDebugger stack.

No, there was never really a reason to think that. It seems more likely there's something erroneous with the error messaging in 9.6.6 (this doesn't happen in earlier versions). Panos has reproduced the error so fairly confident a fix will be forthcoming...
