Problems while grouping

For the second time I've had a nasty experience
while trying to group objects.

After selecting four objects I clicked on
Object/Group Objects.

The main window closed/disappeared
and up came the window for group
edit of objects I'd selected. However they
weren't grouped.

When I tried to get the main window back
(Window menu) there was no main window.

When I tried to close the object window I
got an alert box asking if I wanted to save
it then saying that there was another stack
with the same name already open and did
I want to "purge" it.

In this latest case I'd taken the precaution
of using the altTuit archive plugin so no
harm done but in the first case I lost many
hours of work. Nothing I did would get my
prog back.

Is there a fix for this behaviour?
