Installation Help

Post by JustinW42 » Sun Nov 30, 2014 7:40 am

Hi guys! I am new to the Raspberry Pi but I have been a long time LiveCode learner / coder. I have managed to whip up some great tools for my business, and I am even working on some apps that I hope to bring to market soon. Essentially, LC has allowed me to take control in areas where I had previously been forced to rely on expensive and finicky "professional" programmers.

Now that I have jumped into the RPi, headfirst, I am running into some trouble trying to get any of the available LC Pi builds to run on my Pi. Here is what I have done:

- Downloaded LC Community for the RPi (tried 7.0.0 RC3, 7.0.0 STABLE and 7.0.1 RC2)
- Copied compressed files to a USB thumb drive
- Inserted USB thumb drive into Raspberry Pi (Model B+, running the latest version of Raspbian on a 16GB microSD card)
- Copied compressed files from USB thumb drive to Pi Desktop
- Extracted files to folders on the Desktop
- Right clicked on the "livecode-community-server" file (with the gear icon) and went to Properties:
- Under Permissions, I checked the "Make the files executable"
- Right clicked on the "livecode-community-server" file again and looked for "Execute" command, based on instructions from the following thread (http://forums.livecode.com/viewtopic.php?f=76&t=21587)
- I could not find anything that said "Execute", so I clicked Open instead
- An option pops up and asks how I want to open the file - I have tried "Execute" and "Execute in Terminal" and neither one seems to do anything, regardless of which LC version I try to install.

When I try "Execute in Terminal", it almost seems like there is a very FAST black popup window which appears and disappears (so fast I am not even convinced it happens all the time) - that is the only difference I see. I read about the old bug related to the 16 / 32 bit buffer settings on the Pi, but based on my understanding that issue has been resolved. Am I overlooking something obvious? I am sure my general inexperience is leading me astray, but I tend to follow instructions well and I have tried many times to get this right. I have also tried various combinations of copying the files over, restarting the Pi, trying again, restarting, etc..... No dice.

Any tips from the Pros??

By the way, I don't think it matters but in the interest of being thorough, I am powering my Pi from a 1amp Motorola charger; with the keyboard, mouse and HDMI attached I think that is just enough power.... I have not run into any issues and I have been testing with it in this configuration for several days. I thought maybe the added USB thumb drive might be affecting the performance (using too much power and preventing the processor from running commands? Who knows...) so I disconnected it after powering down the Pi, then rebooted without it and nothing changed. I can probably rule out that unlikely scenario, but I figured I would mention it.

Justin,

I recently did the install on Raspberry Pi also and the IDE seems to work fine (except for an issue with sound not playing, and lack of a SQLite driver).

So the first thing I am wondering, is whether you really meant to install livecode-community-server or do you want to install the IDE?

The server is used within the context of an Apache web server - in which case it should open and close very quickly because you didn't give it any work to do.
This would be the link for the server:
http://downloads.livecode.com/livecode/ ... _2-rpi.zip

If you want to get the IDE installed, then you would download and install this file (if you want the 7.01RC2 version):
http://downloads.livecode.com/livecode/ ... -Linux.rpi

I was confused at first, because I thought that .rpi meant that some type of package installer needed to be used for the installation. This is not the case. Just make it executable and run it, after a little delay, the LiveCode installer will run and install the software. It will then conveniently show up in the Programming group of applications from the main menu of installed apps at the lower left side.

dsimpson, you hit the nail right on the head! I was trying to install the Community Server version, whereas I should have been using the IDE which you kindly directed me toward.... Thanks so much! Now I feel like a total tool for wasting three days on that issue.

Well, onward and upward! Testing out some LiveCode stacks, as we speak!

A little belated, but I just got LiveCode IDE installed on my new Raspberry Pi (Rasbian OS) system. When I downloaded, it came through as an rpi executable but with no execute privileges. Once I changed the privileges and assigned the terminal to open it loaded easily like other platforms. One other problem I had was in selecting a backdrop. The screen went black with no LC windows appearing above it. I just rebooted and all worked ok.

I still need to change the keyboard since Raspi defaults to the British layout. So far the # char needs the \ key and I haven't figured out how to type a " char. A new learning experience.

FAQ for the LiveCode raspberryians
http://forums.livecode.com/viewtopic.ph ... 87#p110881
answers some of your remaining questions:
=> "sudo raspi-config" in LX-Terminal gives you a settings dialog (especially for keyboard settings)

In the "RaspberryPi stacks" collection you will find as #1 a stack "backdropRaspi.livecode", that can be used, not only on Raspberry Pi, to show a virtual "backdrop" (and has some other tiny features):
