Newbie Questions -- Tutor, Graphs and Charts

Post by Anzwertree » Sat Aug 22, 2009 6:59 am

Okay, I am new to programming. I've only been studying a few years on and off. Now that I'm in school I decided to buy Revolution. I have a lot of ideas, but it's somewhat intimidating how much you can do with Rev. It is hard to know where to start. Does anybody know of any video tutorials other than the ones of Rev website? Maybe a paid tutorial website or something.

Also, some of my ideas will use graphs and charts. I noticed there is an add-on for this, but I haven't really mastered Rev yet. So I'm not sure if I should get it until I know more. Can anyone explain how it works? Do you have to get the chart add-on or does it just make it easier?

Dear Anzwertree,

I'm an experienced Revolution programmer. Would you like to send me an e-mail and see if we can work out something? See below for contact info.

Best,

Hi,

I am the author of said charts add-on. Even though it comes with a trial version and a heap of examples, I'd suggest start with the basics first and try it out once you mastered some small projects. Once you feel comfortable with the main language, I'd suggest to go see for yourself if the add on will make your life easier.

All the best,

Malte

Wow, really? That's awesome. I didn't expect the developer to pop in. Thanks for the information. This really is a great community. Anyway, hopefully it won't take me too long. Rev appears to be a whole lot easier than what we're going through in class right now. The semester just started and we've been going through the history and basics of C all week. It took me an hour just realizing I forgot one ; somewhere that was breaking the entire code. If I had to write more than a page of C right now my head would explode. But Rev is like a blast of fresh air. It makes it fun again. If it doesn't already exist, someone should create a Rev online video tutorial website. Kind of like Showmedo for Python and VTC for visual learning.

Hi Anzwertree,

The trouble with a single tutorial "programme/course" is that you can such a wide range of anything that it would be a never-ending task.

This thread is maybe a bit out of date now, but it has links to many of the sites that I've found invaluable in learning my way with RunRev.

One glaring omission in that post (apologies to those other glaring omissions...!) is http://www.sosmartsoftware.com/?r=revol ... ciels&l=en which includes a great repository of beautifully presented material, from the late and sadly missed Eric Chatonet.

You'll also find the RunRev community is definitely a community - the "big hitters" and power developers are still very much part of the community rather than off in their ivory towers. In Malte you have a major and invaluable contributor with as pleasant and helpful service as you could possibly want, with great support for his products that are of highest quality. I think you will find that as you grow into RunRev and get comfortable with the main concepts, that you will realise chartsEngine is a superb product that can make it simple to get the results you achieve. Of course you don't have to have chartsEngine, but Malte's forte is making a classy result very simple.

It needn't be as daunting as you think to get some good results though - if you have a look at the http://revmedia.runrev.com/revMedia/ demonstration revLet (not the samples, the main page "teaser" info/demo) you will see that one of the items covered is getting data from a financial page, processing it and displaying a graph, all in a few lines of script.

Good list, SparkOut.

May I humbly suggest including revJournal?:
http://www.revjournal.com/

As a community-driven site for and by Rev developers it's chock full o' tutorials, tips, articles, and more for beginning and intermediate Revvers alike.

Of course - I already apologised for the glaring omission!

New to RunRev ...trying to duplicate RevMedia demo chart?

Post by dsimon » Fri Sep 04, 2009 1:20 am

Hi there....I'm taking the advice offered earlier by HTH....

"It needn't be as daunting as you think to get some good results though - if you have a look at the http://revmedia.runrev.com/revMedia/ demonstration revLet (not the samples, the main page "teaser" info/demo) you will see that one of the items covered is getting data from a financial page, processing it and displaying a graph, all in a few lines of script. "

Except I'm stuck trying to duplicate the actual chart image described in the demo as ...set the points of graphic "Adjusted close" to tAdjustedPoints show group "Adjusted close"....What group should I create?

:D HTH is a "meme" started by Jan here, blatantly stolen by me - short for Hope That Helps!
Sorry it caught you out. I should really sig it as well.

The demo on the revMedia page uses a group (which they have named "Adjusted Close") I believe to act as a placeholder for scaling of the graphic, with axes and labels.

I'm a bit caught up with things at the moment, but if I get chance sometime anytime soon I will have a look in a bit more detail for you.

I knew there was a reference to this before, take a look at this thread: http://forums.runrev.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3431 it should help clear things up a bit hopefully.
