Stack Corrupted
I am getting an error when attempting to download and launch any program, for instance (mobGUI) or any other 3rd party stack. The error message says "Unable to open stack: stack is corrupted, check for ~backup file. Any ideas on what's happening here?

I guess you are using LC Community version?
But there is a Community version of mobGui, you should be able to find it.
Oh, and the short answer is you can't open a protected stack in the Community version of LC.

Re: Stack Corrupted
Is there really a Community version of MobGUI? If so - could someone point me at it please? I've seen several posts saying "You need to buy the commercial version AND you need to buy the commercial version of LiveCode". Which if true sucks just a bit.
If LC Community Edition can't handle protected stacks that seems to cripple its expandability. For example; so far it seems the XML external I wanted to use and now MobGUI are both unavailable to me as a Community user, for the whole protected stack reason?
Hopefully I'm wrong....
Steve
p.s.
Something should probably be done about the "Corrupted Stack" message. If LC Community can't read protected stacks it should just say so. I spent an hour or so trying to figure out why the XML external I was trying to use wouldn't load and ended up contacting the author asking why his stack was "corrupted". Of course, turns out it was fine but....

Re: Stack Corrupted
There is a community version of mobGui but J. Craig (the developer) posted the link to download elsewhere.
He may have reasons for doing that (working out bugs) so I'd suggest you write him directly (http://mobgui.com/contact.php) for the link.
Many of the external developers are looking at upgrading for open source.
Yes, a better message from LC would be... uuummm ... better.

Thanks (again!) SImon. I tried a bit of searching for the Community edition of MobGUI first, but I bow to your superior Googling.
Really hoping

Re: Stack Corrupted
I think the fact that the Community Edition can't use Protected Stacks is actually the correct functionality if you think about it. If a stack is 'protected' then it is, by default, 'closed' therefore not Open Source.
As to the expandability - that will come, as Simon mentioned, when the developers of those extensions do Open Source versions. Until then - you are stuck with Closed/Commercial only
It's not really a problem, unless the developers have stopped doing stuff with their extension (then you might not want to be using it anyway!), or they have no plans on doing an Open Source version - which is within their remit if they want to make money from their extension.
just my thoughts.
