We're less than a week away from the next meeting so I'm just bumping this thread.

I'll be there. Wouldn't miss a hash-out on the whole open-sourcing of LiveCode issue. I think that this is a big enough topic!

I have to say that my initial reaction is "Awesome!" My next immediate reaction is... "OK, I just plunked down a nice chunk of change to be a paid user of LiveCode and now you're asking me to give a whole lot more to make it free? It's an interesting marketing push.

Honestly, I think they'd be better off NOT asking current paid users to pay again. They're preaching to the crowd and there may be some fear as to what going "free" would mean to them.

I do like the part in the FAQ:
I purchased recently but will no longer require a license once the community edition is available. What can I do?
We are committed to ensuring all existing customers are fairly treated during this transition. Please contact us to discuss your options.

On the other hand, I'd like to know exactly who "owns" the community edition. I have a lot more reading to do, but this is certainly interesting. One problem with having a "community edition" that is still owned by one organization is that they can take all of the code and simply decide to not release the "copyright" if they want to and stop the open-source version (it has been done before). I'd have to check out the GPL license to see how likely that would be... See you in a week or so.

Funding for the Kickstarter project was successfully completed less than an hour ago, and already the first stretch goal has been funded too:

Those of you at the last meeting who said it couldn't be done owe me a beer. :)
