In older recensions of LC there were far more INKs available than there are now,
I 'd be glad if someone could explain why they were removed.

I believe it's in the Release Notes for the version with the change. IIRC that would be v7.0, a byproduct of switching the graphics subsystem to Skia.

I know of one project adversely affected by the tradeoff of inks for graphic effects, and many for whom the graphic effects were a lifesaver.

I wonder why BOTH systems could not have sat together in the IDE?

Mark Waddingham could do a better job than I could in explaining how deeply inks are tied to the underlying graphics subsystem. I'm content to accept that they are, and even the one project I know of that was affected eventually found a workaround among the newer inks.
