Personally I would far rather always keep my "shit" on various external hard drives than in a cloud.
If someone breaks into my house and manages to extract anything of any use off those drives, well,
frankly, they deserve it after the effort it will involve.

That's a great also. I have all my work files, email archives, and SSH keys on an encrypted thumb drive updated with each backup, taken with me nearly anytime I leave the house.

Storage is cheap. Redundancy of type is almost as important as redundancy of number.

To beat a dead horse, I love my Chromebook. When I'm not at my desk it's my device of choice. When you get one, you know the tradeoff for cloud storage -- it's one of the most secure operating systems available. If anything shows up in its routine system scan, the OS is replaced with a clean version automatically, which takes only a couple of minutes. It's wicked fast and very lightweight. You do have personal storage that is not backed up to the cloud, which you are responsible for, but everything else is cloud based which means all your data can be accessed from any device including a friend's Chromebook when you sign in with your credentials in guest mode.

The recent glitch was widely discussed on all Android and Chrome data channels, but even if you were actually affected (I wasn't) there were 3 ways to work around it, none of them very difficult. The fix was released in a day.

In spite of the distrust of Google's data collection behaviors (which you can delete, turn off, or avoid entirely) I think Google and Android are the new Apple in terms of innovation and user experience.

Hope I didn't start a platform war. I'm just enthusiastic about Chrome OS.
