What can be done to get LiveCode used in far more schools?

Well, here's a thought:

Mind you, I do feel all that 'stuff' about 'classes'
and 'inheritance' would confuse young learners.

But, as LiveCode already has 'object' and so forth
as equivalent terms that shouldn't be a huge problem.

It should be pretty easy to run something like this up in LiveCode.

The questions I would ask are:

1. What sort of educational uptake/traction does Greenfoot (and similar exercises) have

2. Whether the time and effort involved in setting up the same sort of thing in LiveCode
would be justified?

The screenshot I have posted is my slight fiddle with one of Greenfoot's introductory lessons, and the
firsth thing that strikes me is that 'turn' seems to function in other units than degrees.

I would argue that LiveCode's use of degrees is probably easier for young learners to understand rather than some sort of arbitary
'turn'.

Well, I doubt turning the IDE into someone else's idea of an IDE is going to turn the trick ;)

You know what might do it? When your talking to someone about introducing Lc into a curriculum, use outrageous words in your descriptions.

Something like :
"... you'll be able to transmogrify the zorks right out of that lesson!"

Also, slip a few animal sounds into the discussion, if you can do it and make them wonder if you just said 'meow' in the middle a word in your sentence.

I am not sure about that as there is an entire class of this type of thing:

https://edublocks.org/

https://playentry.org/

https://developers.google.com/blockly

https://www.tynker.com/

https://scratch.mit.edu/
use outrageous words in your descriptions
If you want to make facetious remarks as some way of replying to a serious question . . .

You point out why turning the IDE into someone elses idea of an IDE doesn't work. Your own links show there are more versions of 'turtle' than there should ever be.

I was quite serious, people, for whatever reason, tend to pay more attention to people who say outrageous things. Did you somehow miss the news coverage over the recent attack at the capitol of this country?

If you did, the take away is basically this -
Somebody makes an outrageous claim that certain politicians are eating children.
Said person immediately gathers a large following across many channels of social media.

The POTUS {currently facing ONLY his 2nd impeachment} incites an insurrection against the country he is supposed to be leading.
THOUSANDS show up to sack the place.

The POTUS's lawyer declares that the capitol should be taken back in "Trial by COMBAT!"
He is cheered off the stage.

You see a theme here? BTW, I would certainly *not* suggest you send the people you talk to out to do criminal things, such as the above examples tend to illustrate, but that may just be me.

Well, as long you didn't say they are eating cheese,
I guess you're politically correct ?

Heh, I know there is a devil, he is in the details ! ;)

And yes, being cheesy as I am should be a criminal offense in it's own right :D

I have sooooooooo missed you Thierry. I hope you are definitely doing alright through the current insanity.

the recent attack at the capitol of this country
Which country would that be?

Certainly, here in Bulgaria, "this country" doesn't have a 'capitol' (whatever that might be).

At the risk if accusing you of being nationally chauvinistic . . .

I have got past the stage of making funny noises to attract attention (oddly enough, when I learnt to talk, I gave up the funny noises).

So, after thinking that everyone gives a damn about what happens in your country, you demonstrate judgementalism based,
presumably, on your experience as a teacher of computer programming to Primary school aged children.

I would suggest you go outside and get a spot of fresh air and count to 10: certainly works for me. 8)

I wasn't aware of any other countries whose national leader recently incited insurrections, or whose chief exec. is specified by 'POTUS', are you?

I have no idea what that means in the context of this conversation, but excellent job of picking up using outrageous statements ! I applaud your efforts !@!@

That is a real shame. Think of how much less dramatic watching Dart Vader would have been without that ominous music in the background

I don't have to think that, it is more than obvious everyone else on the planet gives a damn about what happens in 'my' country, which anyone with eyes could gather just watching the news of *almost* any other country on this planet. Heck, we don't have the spotlight to ourselves, other countries share it, such as (in no particular order) Russia, China, N.K., U.K., the list goes on and on. I'm sure 'een your country could be of concern at some point to someone :P :P :P

You would presume incorrectly on the 2nd part, it is based on the observation that once you have one turtle vers. of logo, you have pretty much made all the turtle versions you need to make. Since none of the other versions have made any great inroads into the institutions your talking about, there would be no reason to think that yet another one would somehow 'turn the trick'.

But don't let me discourage you from it, you keep on swinging there boy oh boy heh.

Possibly, IFF you are really only interested in turtle graphics, which as a learning tool are good as far as they go.

My question is related to how almost all these interfaces use turtle graphics or some variation on them to teach a programming language,
nit that they are instantiations of turtle graphics as such.

So; let's state my question in a way that is about as blunt as a blunt thing:

Would some sort of turtle graphic type interface 'strapped onto' LiveCode be useful for young learners to get into LiveCode?

Indeed . . .

BUT . . .

7 years ago is 7 years ago, and times and situations change . . .

AND what is clear to me is that the number of children who have not been brainwashed into
believing that ALL learning has to be instant-satisfaction fun has decreased significantly . . .

The fact that, as far as I'm concerned, stinks worse than a 2 week old fish, doesn't solve the problem
about how to get children 'hooked' on computer programming.
