Peculiar remarks

Post by richmond62 » Fri Jun 21, 2019 6:31 am

Here:

https://livecode.com/kidcode-teaching-p ... -together/

Some called Tinto Brass has written this:
sorry my englishe is very carzy. rest easy, do not stress.

so do you mean to say that leant to code this way will much rejoin in any argument? would the child’s learn englishe and live code to ‘red carpet’ a program that do absolute anything at all?
And I feel unable to "rest easy" . . .

I wondr what "to 'red carpet' a program" means?

Presumably? this:

"a program that do absolute anything at all"

could mean, "a program that does absolute nothing at all"

As the programs that are illustrated on that page by So-Easy International are
peculiarly non-educative"
The first release teaches 6 English letters, 6 basic numbers, 6 basic colors, 6 basic shapes, 6 popular animals, and 6 body parts. They are combined with 6 basic LiveCode commands GET, SET, PUT, SHOW, HIDE, and MOVE to teach both English and coding at the same time.
One wonders how one can learn English on the basis of a knowledge of 6 letters:
especially as the instructions are written using structures and vocabulary that
presuppose the user already has quite a reasonable grasp of English.

Whoever designed these interfaces seems to know nothing about heirarchy of difficulty
to start with:

Feeling peculiarly nit-picky today Richmond? The examples looked educational to me, for the extremely young.

As I specialise in interface design for content delivery and reinforcement,
have analysed a considerable amount of this type of program, published
a paper on this and designed a lot of this myself I can see that these programs
are problematic; especially in their use of metalanguage which young learners
will not have had access to, and if they had would not benefit from using
these types of program.

This is not out of a desire to be particularly picky; but I was asked
to assess this page as well as similar claims elsewhere (particularly
several EFL CD-ROMs delivered by Pearson-Longman), it does make
me sad to see things presented as something they clearly are not, and
even more when the sort of things that are claimed on this page
can be done but aren't.

Oh, well thats different then. As a non educator nor a specialist, to my untrained eye, it looks about like the stuff that would be presented to educate the extremely young (pre-school age and like that).

In my own life time, it reminded me of flash cards.

THAT is one fascinating read, Richmond! A lot of astute observations as well.
