I found the forums! Do I win a prize?

OK, so the forums are linked from the front page of the runrev site... but I only discovered that by using Google to search for "forums site:www.runrev.com". AFAICT (and AFAGCT) that link on the front page is the only one, and it's below the fold.

I went to the front page, and immediately clicked "Resources and Support". A link to the forums on that page would be a good idea. Not finding one, I next clicked on "Mailing lists" - again nothing. At this point I resorted to Google, and first found the forums; then refined my search to find where the links I should have found were - apparently just the one.

Since as I understand it, RunRev wishes to migrate people from the mailing lists to the forums, making it easier to find them would seem like a good idea - at least prominent links on the above mentioned two pages, perhaps others as well, perhaps a presence in the left navbar within the 'resources and support' section.

Good point, benr_mc. You are right, it is difficult to find something specific on the RunRev site. Perhaps a site map with links to all main sections of the RunRev site, such as the forum, Bugzilla, the downloads section etc. could solve this.

I don't think that RunRev wants people to really migrate from the mail list to the forum, though. I believe the two are meant to complement each other. Maybe much later, if this forum ever gets full e-mail support, it could replace the use list.

Yes, I agree. We have the splash bar on the front page, but there should be more links elsewhere - any place where you would expect to find help text.

Just a warning, PhpBB forum mail has been the doorway to hijacks and spam attacks on the site hosting it, I've seen it turned off at almost every Forum I've run across in the past few years.

A recent vulnerability through the mail function cropped up again as recent as May 18th, 2006.

Private messaging works, its not difficult to PM someone and say "Email me"

I'd expect the security hole issue to be resolved by now, after 9 months. What's the current status?

It is easy to send a PM saying "mail me" but that's not very relevant, because I hardly send PM's anyway. E-mail is preferred not for private messaging but for receiving and posting forum messages. I would like to participate in this forum without using my browser.

I don't know I just googled "PhpBB mail vulnerability" and mentioned the most recent attack. The one that occured in 2004 or so is the one that pretty much had every admin disable their mail functionality.

Whats wrong with your browser?

Posting to an internet forum through email seems like a huge security issue. I don't think you've thought this through.

According to wikipedia 55 BILLION e-mail spam messages were sent each day in June of 2006.
Why would you introduce that hazard and nightmare to a perfectly good community?

Just for an example I went to the mailing list archive, downloaded half a month of archived posts and sucked out 99 individual email addresses, all in under five minutes.

Should I paste into mail.app and post spam to everyone to prove my point?

My personal preference is just e-mail. It is fine if you prefer browsing the ofrum.

We should write a software bridge to link the forum and the mailling list

letting everyone choose their favourite without dividing the community...

And BTW, when I click "Resource & Support" on the front page, I do see a link to the forums.. ?

A bridge allowing e-mail access to the forum exists, but RunRev has chosen not to install it.
