How do free apps work in terms of licensing?

Post by ElZitouni » Mon Sep 01, 2025 7:25 pm

Hello: I run a research lab and have various number of undergraduate and graduate students using software I coded to create data, preprocess data, run experiments. I have used the open source version of live code for coding, and run a number of the Macs in my lab with an old OS so that the open source version can run.

I am now considering to upgrade the Macs and that will mean I need to recompile my software to run under the new OS.

I have checked out the new licensing options -- I am not sure at all what to use in my case. I have the idea I could use what they currently call "Apps for sale" model, to then produce free software that I license to my students, no charge.

Is that possible? Or do I still have to give them a fee per license I sell?

Or does anybody have a better idea how to best setup a research lab (non profit) in light of the new licensing model?

I am grateful for your help.

Thanks
Olli.

I think if you distribute your app as freeware you will at some point have to sport a graphic advertising livecode in your app’s interface or some such. I don’t know if that definitely is still the case or if said badge is as yet available or enforced…

I believe your case is one that you need to speak with Livecode Ltd directly. The answer may come down to when you do the rebuilds i.e. in your own time or while at work, crazy as that may be.

Good luck.

Personally I find the boundary between work and my own time if fairly fuzzy as I am self-employed . . . so when asked I always state "free time".

For instance, right now I am AT my place of work, OUTWITH my working hours . . . so how does that fit into someone's simplistic either/or schema?

Actually, as I deploy 'only' to Linux, Windows, and MacINTEL, I work with the last LC Community version and the ongoing community development LiveCode have asked me not to mention round these parts.
