Genesis Thor 100

Post by richmond62 » Thu Oct 06, 2022 11:57 am

Someone with more generosity than thought has gifted me a Genesis Thor 100 (for which I am duly grateful):
-
Z26572_166558.jpg
-
and very sexy it is too, especially for the repetitive tasks involved in SDLC 5 of my ongoing Devawriter Pro . . .

Have just connected it to a polycarb, iMac running Mac OS 10.7.5 and LC 8.1.10

[ and, at home, will connect to my Intel iMac running Mac OS 13 beta "Wot Ever" and LC 9.6.3]

and all is as it should be EXCEPT for the flaming CTRL key

[on my Macs I have mucked around with my keyboard settings so that my CMD key is mapped to my CTRL key so
I don't have to think when swapping back and forth between Mac and Linux]

just DOES NOT play ball . . .

Obviously this is a complete 'fudging walk in the park' as my main use for that type of keypad (have a pair of Belkin Nostromos and
another 'thingy' connected to various Macs) is copy-pasting and navigating around multi-card stacks in LiveCode.

any ideas / suggestions [well, apart from "fling the thing out of the window"] would be most welcome.

LC gets key input from the OS, which uses a device driver for mapping things from the hardware. Most devices use stock mappings, and as such use the OS-provided driver.

If this device doesn't use standard mappings, does it require a driver? How well does it work with other apps?

This device only has drivers for Windows and Linux, but that should NOT be
a problem: all my other keyboard devices don't have Mac drivers either:
but those that possess CTRL keys do send a CTRL key signal to the computer.

On Linux (Mint Linux 19, 32-bit), without a driver, the machine picks up
the CTRL key without a hitch.

Is the Thor 100 generating the same rawKeyDown code for the Control key as a traditional keyboard does?

It does via Linux.

If the key code is the same but the behavior is different, I'm stumped.

Well, here's a funny thing:

I have just plugged the dvice into my 2018 Mac Mini running MacOS 13 beta something and got a notice that says:

"Your SINO WEALTH device cannot be identified . . ."

Dunno about 'SINO WEALTH.'

Hey: Totally Fried!

As, when the computer was running MacOS 12 I swapped the CMD and the CTRL keys the CTRL key
on the Genesis does what the CMD keys does on my 'normal' keyboard and NOT the CMD actions
the CTRL keyboard on my 'normal' keyboard has been configured to perform.

AND, happy MacOS 13 seems to have LOST the system prefs panel where one can muck around with
modifier keys.

Well, "fudge me from behind" (Yes, I am in a bad, bad mood), flaming Apple, in their desire
to turn MacOS in Paris Hilton's Whore's boudoir have decided to muck around with the MacOS
System Settings so it 'looks more like the thing in iOS', which makes things a big headache
for those of us who installed MacOS 10 beta on a G3 beige thing with a G4 processor chip
glued on with some gunk a Serbian bloke gave me in what Dubai was (i.e. not what Dubai
has become: Paris Hilton's spare bedroom) and then ran through all sorts of Macs acquired
(largely in questionable circumstances) until I had a son (my second) who for whatever
unbelievably generous urge gave me a 2018 Mac Mini for Christmas in 2018, and got well
used to the System Settings app which, beyond the move from the Edisonian lightbulb to the
Castro Curly thing, did not change much . . .

. . . finally, more by dint of 3 glasses of reasonably strong white, than by reason of any sort,
stumbled upon this:

-
and . . . and . . . and . . .

The CTRL key works as a CMD key on my Mac Mini running MacOS 13 beta something.

Perhaps I should be happy, I don't know, but it still does NOT work
at work on my 2 polycarb iMacs running MacOS 10.7.5, and I wonder if that
is due to the machines or MacOS 10.7.5.

Considering all the 'blah' about Macintosh adopting USB (rather than ADB),
and how ALL one had to do was connect ANY USB device and it would
'just work', that is a real load of elephant dung.

HOWEVER, the Genesis Thor 100 is a distinct advance on the Delux T9 Pro
I had previously been employing (mainly because my Nostromo 52 was
not much good with 64-bit Mac) as it does have a 'C' key for copying,
which the T9 Pro does not, so had to copy from my 'normal' keyboard
and then paste from my T9.

I try ONLY to type text with my 'normal' keyboard, and do all the other
stuff either with a left-side 'gaming' keyboard (never done any of that sort
of gaming in my life - not my cup of tea) or my vertical mouse:
-

-
as having had serious problems when I was in the UAE
(which involved, among other things, a delightful Palestinian doctor
sticking needles in my hand and elbow and running electric currents
up-and-down (he was delightful and a pleasure, but the needles and
the electricity were not), I am as ergonomic as I can be without spending
buckets on a split, tented keyboard:

Yes, if you have some free cash, and you have a seriously odd urge
to make me very happy, I would love one of those. 8)

Mind you, the lack of feeling in my finger tips is probably
irreparable as has never recovered from a year of heavy
programming with ToolBook on Windows 2000 in, err, 2000. :(
