Do I have to have a Mac to make IOS Apps?

Hi guys!

I am a complete beginner, so sorry if this post seems a bit simple / stupid. I have just joined the Game Academy, and have noticed that the tutorials all feature a Mac version of Livecode, and I am running it on Vista. Do I need to have a Mac to build IOS apps? I know that I have to become an Apple Developer, yet it is unclear whether or not I need a Mac to build IOS apps on Livecode?

Thanks for any help anyone can offer!

Hi,

Before I answer you question... why do you have GAd8de behind your user name? Are you a spammer?

@ Mark: I use all manner of odd forms for both my user name and email address on various forums, to help track where email comes from. I see no spam in his post or his profile, so I'm inclined to give him the respect we'd offer any newcomer.

@ Christian: Welcome to the forums. To answer your question, my understanding is that Apple requires Xcode to deliver apps for iOS, and that Xcode is only available for OS X. Since Apple prohibits running OS X on anything other than "Apple branded computers", AFAIK deploying to iOS requires using a Mac.

If anyone here knows a way to do this from Windows (or better still, Linux) I'd be happy to learn it.

Hi Richard,

Suddenly I see lots of accounts with GA+rubbish in the name. Any idea what's going on?

When you sign up for the academy it creates a forum account for you and they all end in GA (Game Academy) + rubbish.

Yup, you need an Apple Mac to develop for the Apple iPod Touch, iPad, and iPhone. You also need an iOS Developer account, which goes for about a hundred bucks a year. I think Apple charges a hundred bucks a year to keep 8th graders from flooding iTunes with fart apps for the iPhone...

Hi there,
To better answer your question, you can develop and try iOS apps in a basic for on a PC no problem. Add buttons, try out basic animations and functions etc. :D However, to see how it actually runs on an iPhone you will first want to test it on a proper simulator, then on an actual device. To do either of these things you will definitely need a Mac of some kind:!:

 I can recommend getting hold of a MacMini as it is the most cost effective solution for developing on. An Intel DualCore is best as it will support the latest Mac OS and better support when applying your app to an iOS5 device.
All the best

The Mac Mini is a good suggestion. You can always find them used. If you want a reputable used dealer, Mac of All Trades is supposed to be pretty good (http://www.macofalltrades.com.) They've got a refurb Core 2 Duo Mac Mini for $399 listed right now. Macs tend to maintain a lot of value so the used Macs are a little pricey.
