9.6.4 changes?

Post by stam » Sun Sep 05, 2021 12:30 pm

Hi all,
Working on a laptop means being mindful of hard drive space, especially when the app being installed will take up at least 1.7 Gb.

Can someone (hopefully from LiveCode LTD) list the changes from 9.6.3 to 9.6.4?

Other than the change in colour from green to blue, the release notes contain no new information from 9.6.3 that i can see.

Many thanks
Stam

Surely the main change is all the stramashy license changes?

yeh except 9.6.4 is now 200 Mb larger (the app size on mac is just shy of 2 Gb now).

But yes i take your point - i was thinking from my narrow point of view of Indy and why i'm being asked to upgrade where there is no obvious feature change, but didn't think of everyone else having to rent/buy.

Nevertheless, it's worth knowing from my point of view if there is any value of adding 2 Gb too my stretched laptop or not...

PLUS: who would ever release an 'upgrade' or at a least a point release change of any software without a 'release notes' file detailing changes, if only that this is to conform to the new subscription models?

Good bye Livecode - RIP 2021

Post by HenryDi » Sun Sep 05, 2021 1:42 pm

Livecode simply got bogged down. A little bit of each, but nothing really. That's been annoying me for some time. I would have liked to see a clear concept for the future. Now the new subscriptions. A price increase of 200 per cent to be able to serve the same platforms as before. I'm out of here. Too bad. I loved the simple creation of applications. But Livecode hasn't evolved in the last few years. No new controls for Mac or Windows a sensible date picker. No essential widgets. Fundraising in Covid times and now. In Xojo there are so many GUI elements. If only Livecode had that. Then I would stay. Anyway. Sometimes you have to jump ship to discover new lands. RIP Livecode 2021.

I have a licence so sticking around to see the changes.
But about XOJO - lots of GUI elements, yes, but lots of problems with it.
If using panels to show different screens (basically the same as cards in a stack) you very quickly run into namespace issues as for the windows the members of a panel must have unique names. Not to mention atrociaous slowing down.

I could go on. XOJO is not a good option. If you’re going to jump ship go with something thing like Flutter IMHO...

Livecode with more GUI Standard Elements

Post by HenryDi » Sun Sep 05, 2021 5:37 pm

Ok, i try to say it clear. I don´t like XOJO. Maybe some features like MS Office Brigde and more GUI Standard Elements and a cleaner Look, but Livecode stagnant in this area. I wish i can see some more in livecode, but in the moment empty promises. Never mind. I cancel my licence to end of the year.

"200 MB larger" is a meaningless figure without
any explanation about what that represents.

Um, Yes: the Mac version of LC 9.6.4 weighs in at 1.94 GB

I would say this depends on the LC edition you had before. Here on macOS LC 9.6.3 Business was 1.96 GB while 9.64 is 'only' 1.94 GB.
Btw. 9.61 even was 2.02 GB.

The 9.6.4 package now contains all externals by default and according to your license type you are able to use only the externals that are in included in your license. That makes it even easier for LC to create new installers/dmg as there is only one installer/dmg for all license types.

To return the topic to the question: Are there any changes other than the subscription changes included in this point release?

There ought to be as that 'stuff' should not take up such a lot of space.

Unfortunately the Release notes have been cut off in an odd sort of way after 9 pages.

This confirms my suspicion that the "vast change" was done rather more hastily than it should
have been.
