v9.6.1 had 2 release candidates, and then was judged 'stable'.

v9.6.0 had 4 developer previews, 2 release candidates, and then was judged 'stable'.

The general process (as I understand it) is that they release DPs and people test that. *IF* the DP comes back as more or less stable, they then release a RC, which is considered more or less stable but may not be fixed in configuration, or may not be feature complete.

Once they figure it is stable enough, and the features are more or less in the way they want it, and they have fixed the majority of bugs (theoretically), they mark it as 'STABLE'.

There is no way I know of, short of being part of the development team, to know when they reach these marks, and so there is no way to know when something *will* be released as "STABLE".

If you scroll down that page, you will see that a few have been made stable after only a single rc or dp. Some never made it to stable at all.

Ok, thanks a lot Bogs. no worry, the "install new versions" msg keeps poping up... but I'm not ready to be testing new stuff if that could possibly break s/t of my working stack...I guess I'm expert enuff to code my own unstable versions from a STABLE one ! :D :D

You can actually stop that kind of stuff through the preferences dialog on the "Updates" page.

If you want to know when a stable release is made, but don't want messages about betas or dp's, just check the "Stable" box (I've never seen a maintenance release myself, so that may be an idea that was thought up and never processed).
