New version 5.5 announced - free or fee?

Re: New version 5.5 announced - free or fee?
Richard,
a) one would still have to relicense ever 30 days, which becomes annoying after a while;
b) all standalones say "not for distribution" etc, so you can't sell it on any app store for example;
c) there are license conditions saying clearly what you're allowed to do and what not;
d) RunRev could decide to impose more restrictions, e.g. run trial standalones only on the computer they were created on;
e) I have quite a few trial apps that people can use indefinitely and it is a great marketing mechanism because people don't delete your software after a while and might decide to pay for it even a year after installing and as we all know people who don't want to pay simply won't;
f) trials used to be 30 days and installable/relicensable and that always worked fine;
g) why do honest customers have to suffer from dishonest customers' behaviour?

That was the problem. Great for customers though. But I notice they're able to put out features much faster now that the practice stopped.FourthWorld wrote:If they allowed people to keep using time-limited trials indefinitely, what would be the incentive to buy?Mark wrote:I still think they should allow me to download as many trial versions as I need to convince myself that the product is good enough to buy.

I'm waiting for unicode that just works. LiveCode is so very much behind other development environments on this.
Kind regards,

Hi Jacque,
No, LC 5.5 is not sufficient. I can't type Arabic in the script editor and not worry about encodings, like I can in RealStudio. Also, RTL languages are completely broken on Android.
Kind regards,
Mark

Since the entire scripting language is in English I'm at a loss why you'd need to use Arabic in the script editor. But if that's really the case, then RealStudio sounds like a good option for you.
RTL languages are not natively supported in most consumer Android devices. Before Android version 2.2 the ROM had almost no support at all. After that the ROMs did include RTL support but according to what I've read, localization is often removed by vendors in order to save space. After Gingerbread, RTL support was more fully integrated into the OS, but I see discussions where developers are complaining that even 4.x devices do not always support RTL languages. It appears to be heavily device-dependent.

Hi Jacque,
I think this lack of understanding is characteristic of RunRev. Very unfortunate. Apparently, you can't even imagine that one would want to type Arabic in the script editor. Anyway, RealStudio is indeed a great solution for some of my projects.
RTL languages are supported since Android 2.3. Obviously, vendors and ISP's in the Arabic world and many Asian countries don't remove support for RTL languages.
Kind regards,
Mark

Jacque doesn't work for RunRev.Mark wrote:I think this lack of understanding is characteristic of RunRev.
RunRev is working on RTL as I write this. It's not easy, and I don't imagine they'll have it done this afternoon. But they're working on it.
I think I missed something: which LiveCode tokens are Arabic? RunRev describes the language as "English-like", and as you know the core engine is based on Latin ISO 8859-1 at this time. Binary elements like Unicode expressions are better handled from resources outside the script, such as user properties.Apparently, you can't even imagine that one would want to type Arabic in the script editor.
I hear good things about it. Enjoy.Anyway, RealStudio is indeed a great solution for some of my projects.
Most Asian languages are LTR, not RTL. While Android 2.3 did offer some support for RTL, it was notoriously buggy and limited, and only reached completion in Ice Cream Sandwhich, the most recent release.RTL languages are supported since Android 2.3. Obviously, vendors and ISP's in the Arabic world and many Asian countries don't remove support for RTL languages.

Hi Richard,
Jacque replied several support mails. As far as I know she works for RunRev.
RunRev has been working on RTL for a long time.
You're right that most Asian languages are LTR, but not all.
Kind regards,
Mark

LOL.
Quality of product. Quality of support. Timely updates. Inexpensive pricing. Rewards program. etc.
Pretty much the same thing everyone else who doesn't work of RR looks for.

I certainly like what I've read so far.jacque wrote:Anything in particular? You'll like the new android features.BarrySumpter wrote: I'll continue to "skip this version"

But again, at that price?
Simpley put, I can't afford it.
I have absolutely no doubt that the bean counters at RR hold a release until a proper number of licenses have expired. Or even easier just decide that the update is big enough for whatever reason for another fee.
I'd be like Bill Gates setting my alarm clock on the hour so I could wake up and laugh at all the moeny I'm making.
Both of there are novel ideas I'm sure will be twisted into increasing the LC fees.

I work for myself, but I also contribute to the Free Software community, so I know firsthand how difficult it is to rely on service revenue alone.BarrySumpter wrote:FourthWorld wrote:If they allowed people to keep using time-limited trials indefinitely, what would be the incentive to buy?Mark wrote:I still think they should allow me to download as many trial versions as I need to convince myself that the product is good enough to buy.

Mark,
I do not work for RunRev. I subcontracted with them in tech support for a while but that job ended. I'm in the developer program though and I know what's coming.
