The Ghost of Danny Goodman

Post by richmond62 » Tue Oct 26, 2021 10:43 am

As I am currently in a physically bad shape, in the process of recovering from COVID-19 (in spite of being vaccinated),
I am taking the time, probably if I am completely honest, to read Danny Goodman's "Complete HyperCard 2.2" book,
which I possess as a physical book.

I am NOT reading it to learn HyperTalk, a horribly outdated subset of what the LiveCode language has to offer.

I am NOT reading it to learn about MacOS 7 as that had its day a long time ago.

I am reading it as a teach-yourself manual, and am impressed by:

1. The sheer clunkiness and needless verbosity of it.

2. The GOOD things that are there and are said quite well.

3. "the samples provided" . . . that are God-knows-where now . . . but, instead of being random samples
flung into the void, were obviously very closely intertwined with the text.

Here are older versions:

I remember reading the Apple-provided textbook on learning HC in the late 80s… that completely captivated me. No idea how it would stack up today. But suspect that from a learning perspective it would still be quite good….

Richmond,
I'm sorry that you have been under the weather but happy to hear that you are on the mend. I hope that reading Mr. Goodman's text is helpful to your recovery. (I still have a copy, too. Will keep it in mind as possible therapy should the need arise.)

I'm not sure if Mr Goodman's book served as therapy,
but it did take my mind off things a bit.

Thanks for your wishes.

Danny Goodman Says on twitter
“I don’t wanna slow dance with a ghost, I wanna make pottery.” -

Let him make pottery; he's more than welcome.

But LiveCode is not the ghost of Hypercard, it is a full reincarnation; and like most reincarnations
more powerful by a long way than what it reincarnates.

Comparing LC with HC is rather like comparing a Disney CGI film with the Keystone Cops.
