Rotating & Matching Tiles

This is a "chestnut" I've been mulling over for just over a year, and returned to about
5 times, and, at last, I feel I've cracked the "problem" about how the computer might be able to
work out the orientation of each side of a square tile: with custom properties.
Anyway, a long, hot bath (with really great bath salts) last night, and 10 minutes
in front of a computer (it's always the bit in front of the computer that takes the least time)
and I ended up with this:
