Installing LiveCode Business on Linux Today???

Post by karmacomposer » Mon Jun 01, 2020 10:19 pm

I get that people installed Livecode on Linux a year ago or more, but how about today?

I have Ubuntu 20.xx installed, 64 bit and am trying to install Livecode for Linux on it (64 bit - gnome desktop) and I am setting the execute bit properly.

I cannot seem to apt get the libgtk - it cannot be found. Is there an updated location for libgtk?

I also cannot run compiled 32 bit and 64 bit desktop applications on Linux - this distro as well.

Is there a apt-get intall livecode command available?

Please advise.

Thank you.

Paul,

Yes. It's the 1st thing I did. Believe me, I searched for every possible answer to installing and running Livecode and Livecode compiled programs on Linux before I ever posted here.

To me, this is a last resort. I am hoping one of the Livecode all-knowing, all powerful wizards will throw out an answer.

Thank you for the help anyway.

There is not currently a LiveCode .deb package in the Ubuntu repositories.

What symptoms are you experiencing?

Today I downloaded Ubuntu 20.04 and installed it as a VirtualBox machine without installing any additional software or packages not installed with the "normal" (bloated desktop) installation. I downloaded the new stable LiveCode 9.6.0 release. After making it executable it installed and ran without incident.

What happens when you try to launch the installer or your apps? You should not expect 32bit apps to open in a 64bit distro, BTW.

Unless, of course, you have multi-arch setup correctly.

Nothing happens. Literally nothing.

I try to run 64 bit compiled desktop software on a 64 bit distro of Ubuntu Linux and nothing happens. No screens come up - it's
almost as if the programs never even start up.

I downloaded the stable 9.6 release of Livecode and nothing happens after I set the execute bit.

The computer has a ARM64 bit processor, 4gb ram and 256gb of space. It is running a normal 64 bit 20.04 release of Ubuntu server with the current
version of Gnome desktop successfully.

Are there any dependencies I should be worrying about? I know GTK2 and 3+ are installed and working and Pango is installed and
working. I did a apt-get update and upgrade before - so that is up to date as well.

I am not so worried that I cannot seem to install Livecode on this little server, but to not be able to run 32 bit or 64 bit linux apps I compile
from my Windows PC for Linux is worrying me. PC and Mac versions of the compiled software run without incident.

What am I missing here that you guys can run it and I cannot???

I'm pretty sure the problem is your ARM CPU is not supported. I believe Livecode requires an Intel/AMD CPU.

Try the 32 bit distro.

Maybe that works?

Likely, you may be right, but I don't understand why???

I tried 32 bit and 64 bit. No can do.

I don't know why not.

For the sake of argument, I run Xubuntu 20.04 64-bit on a laptop, and run
2 32-bit programs there as well as there is a system/sun-system/magic-thing called multiarch which
lets 32-bit software run.

This also allows this sort of thing:

The computer has a ARM64 bit processor
THAT is probably the problem.

As far as I know LiveCode is currently available for Intel desktop machines
and ARM handhelds only.

That was my shorthand way of saying you can't hold the expectation that it will "just work" in any and every installation. Distros vary in how easy they make 32 bit compatibility, and many distros have heavy and light installation options which further complicates the ability to predict what libs are already installed and what you might need to install to run any given piece of 32 bit software. I did not mean to imply that it was necessarily a hopeless dream. I suppose I could have worded that differently

I was just hoping to run a new Raspberry Pi (4gb and even 8gb ram) with Livecode programs - with a quad core processor, usb 3.0 slots, 256gb micro sd card, wifi, bluetooth and amazing video capabilities, they are pretty much little full-featured computers now, 32 bit and 64 bit capable!

I was able to successfully install the newest Ubuntu 64 bit 20.04 server and gnome desktop with zero problems and it runs beautifully.

Considering how many IOT companies we are going to be working with, these are perfect for testing our IOT apps.

Well, obviously NOT.

Since we are using Livecode for our technology, and since Livecode refuses to run on one of these, using Raspberry Pi's as a testing machine is now out of the equation, which is too bad. For under $90 you can have a full-functioning fully capable server and gnome desktop that fits in your pocket - perfect for IOT, sensors, streaming data, etc.

Oh well.

Yes, the new RPi4 is awesome.

It would be great if someone in our community has the skills and time to refresh the RPi make file for v9.6.
