LiveCode Installation on MacBook Pro With OS X "10 8"

Greetings.

I have attempted to install LiveCode version "8 1 10" on a MacBook Pro that's running OS X "10 8", but so far I'm not successful.

The download of the .dmg file is successful. Opening the .dmg file is successful. Dragging the file onto the Applications folder initiates the copy, which is successful. But when I open the LiveCode app, I get an error informing me that the file is corrupt.

I repeated the entire download and install process and got the same results.

Then I downloaded LiveCode version "8 2 0" and tried installing it, but I got exactly the same results: corrupted file when I opened LiveCode.

Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated!

Hi.

Is this your first LiveCode download attempt? Was it the Community version that you tried to get?

Know that the community version is no longer supported. There are repositories that, I think, go up to v.9.5.

LC does not mind if you can get them from other sources.

HOWEVER: this machine has:

RevMedia 4.0,
LC Community 7.1.4,
LC Community 8.1.8,
LC Community 8.1.10, and
LC Community 8.2.0 (dp 2) installed on it already,

so the only reason I am downloading the LiveCodeCommunity-8_1_10-Mac.dmg thing
AGAIN is to see if I have the same problem as the OP . . .

Cripes: 25 minutes later still not downloaded: 3 cups of Syrian liquorice tea later: good thing the pupils will be doing a test
this morning so I can run back and forth to the can . . .

I have 8.1.10 running "very nicely thank you" on MacOS 10.7.5 and 10.6.8.

Hey: here "we are": the 8.1.10 dmg has downloaded . . .

I am going to install it in 2 locations:

the Applications folder,

and where I normally have my LiveCode installs; in a folder called 'LiveCode' inside my user folder.

Oh, and if this might be relevant, I downloaded LC via the Firefox Legacy browser:

No obvious problems with the copy installed in the Applications folder, nor the one in the /Livecode folder.

Hi Craig, thanks for your reply.

It's not my first attempt to install LiveCode; I downloaded the community edition (version 6 1 0) onto my MacBook Pro in 2013. I only ever looked at it briefly, but recently I decided to start using LiveCode. That version runs without issues, but obviously I wanted to upgrade to the latest version.

I downloaded and installed version 9 6 6; however, when I launch it I'm informed that it won't run with the Mac OS version I have installed (10 8 ).

I will try to upgrade my OS, but that is going to be a rather long and somewhat complex process, so I decided to first try installing slightly earlier versions of LiveCode that will run on Mac OS 10 8. That resulted in my attempt to install LiveCode versions "8 1 10 Indy Edition" and "8 2 0 Indy Edition".

Does "Indy Edition" indicate that a version is a "community edition"?

No, it doesn't, it indicated it is a recently removed commercial edition.

You will find, in my previous posting, a link to community versions.

That's not the file that I downloaded, however. The ones I attempted to install were located on the page downloads_livecode_com/livecode/

I don't know as I have never seen those warnings.

BUT: until you have about 7+ postings here all sorts of restrictions are 'there'.

I suggest you try the ones I installed.

When I do download commercial versions of LiveCode, since the 'big cafuffle' when the Open Source versions
were dumped, I always download them via my membership on the LiveCode site . . . and, unless you have a licence
for those versions you will not get anywhere with them anyway.

Update on my earlier posts...

I downloaded and attempted to install LiveCodeCommunity_8_1_10_Mac_dmg, that I downloaded from community_livecode_com. When I attempted to open the installed application, the same error message was displayed, that is, that the file was corrupted and should be put into the trash.

I'm starting to wonder if there might be a problem in my machine's OS.

I am currently working with the ten day trial license... do you suppose that could be part of the problem? I have been able to download and successfully use LiveCode 9_6_6 on a Windows machine under the trial license. I am hoping to be able to work on the Mac though.

I can see no reason why it should be.

It would be extremely sensible to get in touch with the LiveCode people directly, as maybe, just maybe,
the problem lies at their end.

However, I would suggest you download something else (anything else) in a DMG image and try to get that
to work on your system; just so that you are 100% certain the problem does not lie at your end.

Alternatively: back up your MacOS 10.8 system onto an external something, scrub your machine, and reinstall MacOS 10.8 and
then attempt to install LC 8.1.10 on a 'barebones' Mac system.

For what it is worth, we rarely hear about similar issues. Something is certainly going on, and I like Richmond's suggestion that you contact LC directly. They are pretty responsive.

I am finally able to get LiveCode Indy 8_1_10 running on my MacBook Pro.

I downloaded the dmg image onto a Windows 10 machine and then copied the dmg file over to the MBP. It mounted and installed just fine, and there are no errors when it starts up. Apparently there seems to be something amiss in the MBP's system, but that's another adventure for another day.

Here's another update on this issue.

I'm not experienced enough using the either Mac or LiveCode to even venture a guess as to what might the reason for this.

Something a bit wrong there:

No, you did not.

What you did do was download a dmg file, open it, and then drag its contents somewhere on your hard drive.
No one INSTALLS a dmg.

ALL of which you did successfully with the LC dmg.

Not so.

As far as I can tell from your earlier postings, what went wrong was when you attempted to start the LC app.

SO:

1. Have you tried opening he LC app with a right mouse-click?

2. Have you tried one of the Community versions I referenced above?

That makes me wonder if Bob did drag the LC app out of the dmg and into the Applications folder. Some apps will run okay from within the dmg virtual drive, others won't.

Pretty basic but it doesn't hurt to check.
