Download Runrev for OS9?

Post by tetsuo29 » Sat Mar 31, 2018 6:01 pm

Hello,

I'm having a big nostalgia trip this weekend. I recently acquired a PPC G4 Mac Mini and also discovered that the hacking community has produced a disc that allows one to install MacOS 9 (or Mac OS9 for the forum search engine, it seems to ignore terms like "mac" and "os") on it. Officially this machine only goes back to Mac OS X 10.3.

Now, I'm having a blast playing with OS9. I been digging out old discs and installing ancient software. I ran across an old RealBasic installer and threw that on here and that got me to thinking since I don't use RealBasic any more how difficult would it be to get Runrev (i.e. Livecode) running on Mac OS9?

I started using Livecode in about 2005 when I bought a license for Dreamcard for OS X so, I have no installers for old versions that might run in the Classic MacOS. Am I sold out of llamas here? I did find a link for downloading Rev Studio 2.9 but the .dmg can't be mounted in Classic/OS9 and therefore I have no idea if any of my serials will work with it or not. I did buy Revolution Studio for OSX in 2008. Will that serial number work with any versions that run in OS9?

There's really no reason I'm looking to do this other than to get chance to play with Livecode/Runrev on OS9 while I'm having this nostalgia trip. Anyone know how I can get Runrev on my Classic mac at this point?

Thanks in advance.

Version 1.1.1 allowed you to use and build standalones
free of charge as long as each object had no more than 10 lines of code in it.

I do not know why LiveCode no longer makes these versions available.

Or you *could* use the Metacard starter kits which are still downloadable for the older Mac Os and as far as I can tell seem to run fine in it (I have a complete SheepShaver vm of Os9 running in that fashion).

I can't remember the steps I took to run McOss on Os9, but I know I did get it going. I think Lc up to vers.3.x also had an installer for **Os9, but as Richmond points out, getting a hold of those older installers is an uphill battle sometimes.

** which reminds me I need to test that theory out heh.

I have a PPC MacMini and a G4 iMac: both run mac OS 10.4 + "Classic" (a.k.a. OS 9): perfect for early versions of Runtime Revolution as well as Hypercard.

Recently someone was looking for a Mac Classic version of Runtime Revolution
and obviously having trouble finding one.

I was looking for LiveCode for classic macs. The earlier I could find was version 2.6.1 which requires MacOS 8.6+

I wish I had access to RunRev 2.6.1 or some earlier version that allowed us to run on MacOS 7 or earlier, but I can't find it.

It would be cool if RunRev would simply put those files back onto their download server. There is no harm in sharing them. Just mark them as unsupported.

Unfortunately I could not get that hacked OS 9 boot disk to work on
my G4 Mac Mini, so am running "Classic" under MacOS 10.4, which is fine for
the purposes I want:

1. HyperCard.

2. Authorware 3.

Oh, and Macintosh Garden . . .

I bet if you ask Heather privately she'd send you a copy.

Version 2:

AND, as far as I can work out, even RR 1.0 requires Mac OS 8.6

What has that observation got to do with downloading RunRev for MacOS 9?

Nothing whatsoever.

It seems that RR 2.6.1 that's on that well known Macintosh abandon-ware site, will not run on SheepShaver (which only runs up to macOS 9.0.4), It looks for several things ColorPickerLib (which is an system extension you can copy over from a macOS 9.2.x install), and something about Alias resolving that's missing from InterfaceLib (which is part of the macOS ROM chip or "ROM" file). It seems as though this version of RR 2.6.1 was designed to run in the Classic environment within MacOS X but doesn't launch when booted from MacOS 9. I'll have to confirm this next time I boot up my MDD G4.

The RR v1.1 that's on there works well in macOS 9.04 running in Sheepshaver.

It might be worth a modest investment:

These will run MacOS 10.4 + MacOS 9.2.2

Wow, those G4 macMINIs sure have gotten cheap but I'm not looking for another classic mac, I already have a MDD G4 that can run MacOS 10.4 + MacOS 9.2.2 (and boot to 9.2.2 with "Universal"-mod + run "Sorbet" Leopard 10.6).

I was wanting to run on macOS 9 on Big Sur and higher on an intel based laptop, which Sheepshaver does, but only up to 9.04. However RR 2.6.1 doesn't agree with that version of macOS. It seems as though that version was design to only run in the 'Classic' environment that was dropped in Leopard. RR v1.1 works just fine.

QEMU (or the GUI wrapper for it called UTM) can emulate a PPCG4 and the newer builds of it can run 9.2.2 with sound and all (it can even boot Tiger/Leopard) but that's a bit sluggish compared to Sheepshaver and as far as I can tell in QEMU there's no easy way to move apps and files back in forth between the host OS and the emulated macOS 9 like there is with Sheepshaver.

Sheepshaver is really nice feature wise. I'm convinced that with some work, such as replacing the Finder with any app (it works, I've done this back in the day), it could be made into a macOS classic app wrapper, booting the emulator directly into the target app, similar to what WineSkin does.
