ModeWheel

Post by jmk_phd » Sun Sep 25, 2022 12:14 am

Perhaps of interest to any musicians here is my freeware cross-platform Win/Mac app — dubbed ModeWheel — which displays and plays via sampled keyboard audiofiles each mode of the four most common families of Western musical scales.

The wheel itself is based on a design by the Danish jazz musician Oliver Prehn that could be constructed from a printable template. For the benefit of persons lacking the patience to build and assemble the tool using scissors and cardstock, ModeWheel displays and rotates the wheel on-screen, with the bonus of keyboard displays, audio playback, and simple II-V-I chord progressions.

It was developed as a gift to Oliver and his YouTube community of students in return for all that I’ve learned from his wonderful online jazz lessons.

A Quickstart PDF manual, background information, and secure code-signed installers for Windows (.msi) and Mac (.dmg) are all available on the subdomain I’ve devoted to the project:
