Looking for a LiveCode Developer

Post by clayperr » Sun Apr 19, 2020 4:54 pm

Greetings Listonians.

We require one or maybe two people to work on some projects where LiveCode may be of great use in the Internet of Things (IoT) sector.
Need lower cost guys so hopefully somebody from India, Pakistan, Ukraine, Turkey, Egypt etc may read this?
Cant afford $100 an hour North American rates. (sorry in advance for those put off by this)
Cheers,

Not put off by what you said, but perhaps you could expand a little on exactly what your looking to do. IoT covers a lot of ground, what kind of goals are you looking to accomplish?

Does the project also involve manufacturing hardware?

Can you tell us a bit about it, or at least what market niche it serves?

We do manufacture hardware for our IOT solutions but this will primarily be creating apps and dashboards to instrument data stored in databases such as Postgres, SQL, and influx. Might be a bit of MQTT involved as well.

MQTT is very interesting. But unfortunately, I'm in North America. If budget changes please keep me mind.

Why does that seem vaguely racist? :D

And the punctuation is bad. 8)

And, how many people in India, Pakistan, Ukraine, Turkey and Egypt work with LiveCode anyway?

I''m an Anglo-Scot who stays in Bulgaria . . . mind you, my programming skills are strictly low-level. 8)

While there may be programmers who charge rather less than whichever high-maintenance state you reside in,
I do think your phraseology might have been better put.

And, while FourthWorld might reside in the "first world" you could do a lot worse than stump up the moolah
for his services!

Also: as we are all now living in a world that has changed, and will continue to change, rapidly and significantly,
you might like to reflect on price no longer being decided by geographical location, but by desperation.

No offense meant to anyone that commented negatively. My intention was to be clear that we don't have the budget for $100+ per hour developers and was not interested by 2800 responses for expensive professionals when we can't afford it.

I have worked with many excellent teams of professional developers over the years in developing nations such as the ones mentioned and others with great success. Globalization and technology are the great equalizers and I'm a firm believer in enabling everyone to participate in developing new technologies, regardless of where they live, to the betterment of the planet that we all live in.

Thank you everyone for responding. Its great that there is such a huge community of passionate developers out there using LiveCode.
Cheers

It shouldn't. When cookie-cutter code is needed, without design or business strategy which benefit from more nuanced cultural immersion, hiring generic code from generic coders around the world can be an affordable option.

Check out the LiveCode group on LinkedIn. Not very active with post engagement, but has a lot of members from all over the world:

Personally, I prefer it if a budget-constrained project is identified clearly up front. Always good to know which corner of the Iron Triangle is in play. And when a focus is on hourly rate without consideration of overall cost, I find that useful to know about the business planning as well.

Very kind of you to say. Thank you. And technically, my rate is under $100/hr, but just barely. And with my current schedule I wouldn't be in a position to begin on this until mid-May anyway, so if as quick start is needed I'm not in the running. But I appreciate the kind words just the same.

For about much less dollar per hour it is possible (Bulgaria, India, Russia, Ukraine, Pakistan, China, even some African countries start joining) -- depending on the cost of living in the respective region, education, qualification, experience, age, etc. Mostly such people would go for monthly salaries in the longer run -- as this gives some safety to their life, even if the salary is not that high. There is a trial period, and after that period, it can become a fixed salary.

I found it better working with individuals and building up my own group of developers than working with a company through which all is filtered. You need direct access to individual developers.

Of course it is also better if such groups of developers know each-other and can work together, offline or online. I have had very good experiences with outsourcing to over 100 people, but you must not assume that such developers can do much more than accomplish specific coding tasks. Any UI stuff, any architectural thinking, project management, etc. ... not good to outsource in my experience. Such expertise is only built in time.

You do find experienced LiveCode developers anywhere specially here in this forum. (I corrected this sentence 21-Apr-2020 as it previously incorrectly used the words " not" and "except" instead of "especially" which was not the intention.)

If you want, you need to train them in LiveCode. A very good basis are students of mathematics, engineering and computer science who already know C/C++ really well. Intelligent developer, even students, will get going within less than a month using LC starting with some interesting tasks. They find their way around.

Often enough I was thinking that Livecode itself could profit from such dedicated groups of developers. LC needs so much more to keep up the race. And it needs more support and sponsors.

For the need of setting up and managing whole developer teams, I can offer help.

There are great and highly experienced developers of LiveCode here already. There is an old saying: "I am too poor to buy something cheap". So, I would rather pay some more bucks for sure results than waste money for unpredictable results. Or take the time to build up a group of specialists from scratch. (We did this when Java was first introduced in the 90th. Nobody knew anything about this then new language. It took just one month to work with Java professionally.)

It is that indeed. Good to see another IoT product with LC in a supporting role. Perhaps when it launches you'll consider a guest post on the LC blog? A little promotion for your product, and some good inspiration for readers.

If you don't find the resource you're looking for here (though I would strongly suggest at least contacting Thierry to discuss overall costs - he's quite expert, uncommonly articulate, and very friendly), you may consider posting your solicitation to the LC group on LinkedIn, where we have a large international audience:

Where is "here"?

This is an odd statement as I am well aware there are experienced LiveCode developers in several countries . . .

I read that as referring to the forums.

Though there are hundreds of languages and most pro devs are polyglots, there is an aggregation dynamic in any market place where the top gets bigger at the expense of all other options simply because it's the top ("No one ever got fired for buying IBM", as the saying goes).

It's true that it's harder to find LC devs than it is to find devs using Java (#1 at TIOBE). It's also true that the number of good LC devs available, as with even many less popular languages, so vastly exceeds any budget that I've never worried about choosing LC or any other non-Java language.

I am sorry. This is totally nonsense what I wrote -- the opposite was meant. I wanted to write: "YOU FIND EXPERIENCED DEVELOPERS ESPECIALLY HERE." I do not know how this word "except" slipped in and I take it as a total failure of my attention and mind. I should have read what I had written. Mind mind just wandered in something else.

So sorry for this. YOU FIND EXCELLENT DEVELOPERS HERE. And with "HERE" I mean "HERE, IN THIS FORUM".
