Custom URL schemes question

A custom url scheme enables a link clicked in an application to link to another application. This works on mobile. Does anyone know if it works on desktop?
I doubt it works in the browser for security reasons - but I am not sure what the relationship is with a web browser on various platforms? Sorry can;t link to article
