Vista video frame dropping

Post by Simon » Sat Aug 09, 2008 5:17 pm

Hello,
All of the video's in my rev stacks run terribly on Vista, while they run great in QT or WMP. I do use MPEG1 encoding for cross platform and older machines but even a straight Sorenson .mov is choppy. These video's do run well in stacks running Windows XP and Mac OSX.

Does someone know why this is?

As it's getting more and more difficult to buy a computer without Vista I can't ignore the problem any more.

Thank you,
Simon

Ok I've given this a week.
Who do I ask next?

Thanks,
Simon

While multimedia isn't exactly my forte, here are some items to check:
- which version of Revolution are you using?
- which version of QuickTime are you using?
- is the dontUseQT set to true or false?
- is the alwaysBuffer of the player control true or false?
- are there any overlapping controls?

Last but not least, if all else fails, you can try the use-revolution mailing list or email support@runrev.com

Hello Jan,
- which version of Revolution are you using?
2.9.0
- which version of QuickTime are you using?
7.0
- is the dontUseQT set to true or false?
false
- is the alwaysBuffer of the player control true or false?
false
- are there any overlapping controls?
Nope, video is in the top layer.

But since you seem to think it's my set up, does this mean that you are getting good results in Vista?

Regards,
Simon

Actually, I have so far been able to avoid Vista ;-)

Seriously, my questions came as an attempt to narrow down the potential causes. The only other questions that I can think of:
- are you using a windowShape on your stack?
- have you set the blendLevel of the player to anything other than 100?
- have you set the blendLevel of the stack to anything other than 100?

If no one picks up on this, you will want to ask on the use-revolution mailing list or email support@runrev.com - when you do, include the answers you gave me to save some time.

Hi Jan,
Thanks for your reply, but...

- are you using a windowShape on your stack?
no
- have you set the blendLevel of the player to anything other than 100?
no
- have you set the blendLevel of the stack to anything other than 100?
no

Really even the simplest stack drops frames.

Simon

Maybe you should try QT Safe mode:

In QT Player, under Edit>Preferences>QuickTime preferences select "Advanced" and check "Safe mode (GDI only)" Option

Thanks Srdjan,
Not sure that is an option for all the apps I'm putting out.
Half the users don't even know they have QT.

OK this is getting out of hand.
I can't believe that nobody else has seen the frame dropping! I've had a ticket in for 7 weeks and not a single vote for it.
I'm getting kicked around by clients and all I can say is "it's a Vista problem" and that isn't flying any more.

At least if there is someone here who has seen this problem, would you please speak up?

The opposite is true, if someone knows a codec that doesn't frame drop in Vista and works on both Mac and PC I'd like to know about it.

Thanks,
Simon

Of course it's not good to see frame dropping in your movies, but it's hard to pinpoint the cause. Is the ticket you mentioned an entry in the Quality Center or did you email support@runrev.com about this issue?

Hi Jan,
I used support@runrev.com and they pushed it to the Quality Control Centre bug 7254.

In that case, there isn't much more we can do than wait for the team to address the underlying problem.

Sorry,

A year too late, here's one tip for making movies play more smoothly in Vista:

Right-click your program and select "Properties"
Click the "Compatibility" tab
Check the "Run this program in compatibility mode for" option
In the menu, select "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)"
