Re: How to deal with database files for an app?

I wanted to chime-in here on backups: For backups for a small office/home business a basic set-up I do (and is generally the first order of business when I am setting up an office): two 2tb hard-drives (or two 4tb hard drives if you can afford them or have huge amounts of files) rsync for linux or m...

Re: POLL: LiveCode Server deployment

Like @TorstenHolmer I have used LCS for writing API's (amongst other things) and I find it especially quick and easy to work with. This past month I have been working on a Weather Station running on a Raspberry Pi out in a field. Rather than doing much on the rpi, I am just sending the bare-bones da...

Re: Creating accounts for multiple users of a MySQL database

do you need separate user accounts? you said that this will be on the LAN; will all of the users only be using it on the LAN? As with everything, there are several approaches to this, but from what you described so far, my thinking is that it would be better to have one MySQL user that is for the ap...

Re: Which remote DB server are you using?

Using a VPS from Linode, Contabo, or DigitalOcean is only $5.00/month and I can also run Apache WebServer, install Livecode Server, and use OpenVPN for a secure connection with my own Livecode API.

Re: Sessions on XAMPP no go, Live ok.

Would a raspberry be faster then the VPS i now run?
Most likely, with the added benefit of being an always-on local server that could be used for other various tasks or projects (plex server, file server, etc)

Re: Sessions on XAMPP no go, Live ok.

A raspberry pi with Ubuntu 18.04 server would make a nice little LC Server Development Box:

Re: Call Script from within script on server

Yep. You can make your page a regular webpage unless there is something specific is posted to it. Something like: <?lc --if this is a db connection request, get it and exit put $_POST["INSTRUCTION"] into t_instruction if t_instruction is not empty then include "connect/dbconnect.lc" quit else --if t...

Re: WP REST API Plugin - How to actually use it?

I had a quick look and noticed that this has not been updated since 2016. Wordpress went through some pretty major updates last year. I would be hesitant to invest much time or effort into anything that has not kept pace with those changes. Was there something specific you were trying to do? There a...

Re: Access Raspberry Pi to read data.

you could just write a bash script and then call it from Livecode like: put shell("./functions/yourscript) into tScript if you have variables you need to pass, you just send them to your bash script: put shell("./scripts/yourscript var1 var2") into tScript and then your bash script can read those: #...

Re: substack location (filepath)

try this: --set the defaultFolder to stack location set the itemDelimiter to "/" get the effective fileName of this stack #you could put that into a global to pass to your other stack put item 1 to -2 of it into gDefaultFolder #or use it to set your defaultFolder like so set the defaultFolder to gDe...

Re: Setting up in shared host environment (Dreamhost)

@FourthWorld you are right! I just wanted to point it out as an option.

I used to use DreamHost quite a bit, but once I discovered how to use a VPS it dramatically changed how I set up projects. I wish someone had mentioned the possibility to me earlier in my life.

Re: Setting up in shared host environment (Dreamhost)

How married are you to Dreamhost? It is probably possible to get LC working, but using a VPS from somewhere like DigitalOcean or Linode is a little better for doing things like this, although initial setup is a little more complicated since you have to install from scratch. However, once you have it...

Re: Access Raspberry Pi to read data.

In my original setup, I had an old Linksys WRT54g router with a couple of large antennas. You can find those routers at thrift-stores for a few dollars and install dd-wrt on them. The antennas un-screw and can be replaced with larger, more powerful antennas. That router can be ran on 12v (solar pane...
