Session Suggestions for LiveCode Global
Hey, beginners!
What sorts of sessions/classes would you like to see at the bi-monthly LiveCode Global online conference? What would get you to tune in and watch?

Re: Session Suggestions for LiveCode Global
Mike.
I have always thought a 15 minute session that shows how simple it is to create a stack. One that everyone can see the usefulness of.
The calculator construction is good, but a bit too fast for a complete newbie. I think a lot of people would be hooked if they could see, step by step, a much simpler app. Dragging a few controls onto screen, an intro to the script editor, and a few lines of code with one mouseUp handler. And then click on a button. Maybe an address book?

Well, I am glad you put this in the 'Complete Beginners' section, because despite having been here a year or so, I have no idea about what this bi-monthly event you are talking about is
Any links to information about it I'd find useful, my search for it turned up zilch

Re: Session Suggestions for LiveCode Global
I think a tutorial on creating a simple currency converter app would be both interesting and useful to new users.

Re: Session Suggestions for LiveCode Global
A currency converter is ideal. Two fields and a button. The math is easy, and only one instance, like shekels to quatloos need be actually implemented, since the audience will "get" how to expand to other currencies.
One need not include automatic downloading of daily exchange rates, stored in a custom property. That is for lesson 2.

Re: Session Suggestions for LiveCode Global
In March's LCG I think I had a simple address book made in about 15 minutes, but the goal was different, to get everyone introduced to data storage, so the session was an hour.
Re: Session Suggestions for LiveCode Global
I'm also thinking about
• An introduction to printing
• How to build a typical record list/input form stack because you are then one step away from hooking it up to a database

Thank you LiveCode_Panos, it was interesting to review.
Re: Session Suggestions for LiveCode Global
It seems doubtful to me that many LC beginners would be willing to pay $299 for a few talks on introductory LC. (Admittedly, the other talks would be of interest to intermediate and advanced users.) Shouldn't material for LC beginners — dare I say it? — be free?
Re: Session Suggestions for LiveCode Global
There is free material for beginners. There is a lot of free material for beginners. This is a way to give them sessions at LCG that are just for them instead of being more in depth the way most of the sessions have been.
Someone who is an LC beginner is not necessarily a development beginner, so I’m thinking about sessions that both cover less advanced material and are immediately usable.

Re: Session Suggestions for LiveCode Global
I did not subscribe to the Global presentations this year because too many of the presentations were over my head orof no use to me. They seemed to be aimed more at advanced developers/professionals rather than beginners or hobby developers. What I would have liked was short simple ones to introduce me to using script-only stacks, using widgets, trying to use LCB, incorporating SVG graphics in my programs and other new aspects of LC9. (Features that I do not understand how to use. or even how to get started using them).
Mike, I agree with you.
Are you thinking of something like this? https://sites.google.com/a/pgcps.org/li ... magic-math
or more instructive like this? https://sites.google.com/a/pgcps.org/li ... /variables
I also agree with your idea of showing real life examples.
I wonder what the conversion rates are? (paying customers/downloads) or (updates/original downloads). I wonder if easier and simpler tutorials would increase the retention rate of new people trying the language or programming for the first time.
Mike, I agree with you.
I always thought that LiveCode needs simpler tutorials for beginners and non-programmers . What we need are short ones just to illustrate simple aspects of LiveCode and how to get started.dunbarx wrote: ↑Wed Mar 28, 2018 3:35 pmMike.

For new people, it helps to illustrate what else you can do with LiveCode. Seeing applications gets people excited to build something themselves. https://sites.google.com/a/pgcps.org/li ... lculationsA currency converter is ideal. Two fields and a button. Re: Session Suggestions for LiveCode Global
Hey, Cyril, have you thought about doing a couple 15-minute sessions?

Re: Session Suggestions for LiveCode Global
I did, briefly but I am not good on video. Besides, I am not a great fan of videos myself. Too much pausing, backing up and replaying. Videos either go too fast or too slow. I prefer working from screens. I find it easier to follow along.
Do you use videos a lot?
