"Package file was not signed correctly"

"Package file was not signed correctly"

I created my free Android app file with the key supplied by Google Play and it went through
as "Published" but when I try to download it on my Android, I get the message
"Package file was not signed correctly"
The .keystore prompts go through correctly with the alias and passwords.
This is my first app and it's left me totally confused.
