Can linux be used?

Post by jfb » Tue Feb 09, 2016 11:47 pm

I am interested in purchasing this course, but notice the requirements say Mac or Windows.

I did see mention of a possible Linux version. Has this happened yet? I really don't have much interest in trying to setup a Windows environment just for this course.

Regards, Jim

LiveCode for Linux has been around for years. I use it daily. I would imagine any instructional materials about LiveCode could be used well on Linux.

I looked at the faq and at the top it lists the min sys requirements as Mac and Windows. Further down where the question is about android and ios it says a Linux versions is planned, which prompted my question.

Tried to post a link to the faq but got an error saying my account can't post links, so I'll try this way.

Hi Jim,

1. welcome to the forum! :D

2. Yes, you need at least 10 postings before you can post links etc.
Build-in spam protection, I think.

3. I think Linux is not listed in the system requirements, because the course
uses a lot of videos and multimedia support on Linux has still erm... a LOT
of room for improvement, to put it politely 8)

Best

I do almost all of my work on LiveCode -- both the core LiveCode engine and the IDE -- using Linux. So, yes, Linux can be used. :)

True for many things, but as Klaus pointed out the tutorials in question here are very multimedia-heavy, and the LiveCode Linux engine is currently, shall we say, a bit weak with things like being able to play audio and video files.

If that's changed in v8 that would be great to know.
