PROJECT: RevOnline triage

Our community needs a convenient way to share stacks files and code. RevOnline is that solution, but some have reported issues which prevent them from using it.

Let's fix it.

The challenge is that these issues, AFAIK, are only intermittent. For example, I have the misfortune of always having it work for me, so I'm unable to fix it because I can't see the problem.

But if you have trouble with RevOnline, and you have some time to help fix it, we need you.

Let's form a team to triage RevOnline:

1. Make RevOnline work for everyone
This is an obvious first step, since of course if it can't be used it has no value at all.

2. Paper Cuts
We can make a list is small things we know we need done, like cleaning up the redundant unsorted tags, and knock those off second.

3. RevOnline Next Generation
Many in the community have expressed some good ideas on how to enhance RevOnline, and the core dev team at RunRev has plans of their own. If we can assemble a team to handle the first two RevOnline triage stages, we will have learned a lot about the process, and have established a team in the community who knows its code well, so it would seem a good opportunity to coordinate those community members with the relevant RunRev staff to work together for the next generation.

Exactly how this works in light of RunRev's plans is hard to say, but the one thing we do know is that if we can't do the small things the big things are even less likely.

So let's get #1 done and then a couple actionable items from #2, and along the way we'll have figured out what needs to happen for #3.

Interested? Chime in.

Gives connection errors, hangs (try to sort) and most people are not allowed to login or sign in, not to speak of upload.
Very much agree with this. Only once have I managed to log in, in how many years?

I think I was able to sign in once, but since then have been unable. Password recovery does not work and when I try to sign up using a different e-mail address, The e-mails never come.

The second one has only one 'defect': login, sign in and uploading is disabled for everyone who had no license before 200x ... (or isn't older than xx?).
It isn't disabled, it's just broken. I've had an account since RevOnline first started and I frequently can't log in. One time it was almost a year before it worked for me again. I think a version update fixed it. Accessibility comes and goes.

Unfortunately I'm not sure the community can fix the login issues. But the purpose of RevOnline is to allow everyone to participate without exception.

RevOnline is twofold, the 'User Samples' and 'LC share'
Question: is there a difference? available stacks?
If as I suspect there is not for I have searched for some stacks then they should more or less look and feel the same and have the same functionality.

Just a note:
Maybe this topic should be moved to 'learning resources'.

Best regards,
Marc

Hermann, you have convinced me you are right. Obviously I must be too young to use RevOnline. I don't know why I didn't think of that before. :-)

Marc, there's no difference in the stacks you have access to without a login. A login is only required when you want to upload or manage your account.

RevOnline allways used to work for me anyway, but now I get constant hangs, so I've been running some tests between different versions of LiveCode.

I'm running Win 7 (32) and win 8.1 (64).

From version 4.6.4 all the way up to 6.1.3 it's stable with no hangs.

From v 6.5.2 hangs start to happen...(I do not have versions between 6.1.3 and 6.5.2)

Now the good news... I've just tested 6.7 dp4 and no hangs.

So if you're having problems with the 6 series, try 6.7 dp4 and see if the problems stop.

Hello Andy,

assuming you mean "UserSamples" with "revOnline" (not the LC share website),
could you please give more details what "working" means here with these three levels:

1. browsing
2. sign in / log in
3. upload

Thanks, Hermann

They are the same thing in different forms. RevOnline can be accessed through LC or from a web page, but the sources and stacks come from the same database.

Yes, all info from above post is using UserSamples in the IDE.

As a side note, I monitored the traffic flow from the UserSamples stack in the IDE to the server and all requests were actioned and resulting data returned very speedily, so it looks like the problem lies within the IDE and not the server.

Somewhere here it is mentioned that RevOnline has script snippets. I am only using LCshare since UserSamples freezes LC for me, and I don't see any snippets there. I only see stacks. Am I just missing them? Are they only visible in UserSamples? I don't remember seeing them in UserSamples, although it's been a long time since UserSamples worked for me.
Just curious....
