Detecting a phone call

Hi,
I have a pretty standard app with a toolbar at the bottom which contains a number of buttons with the button name showing below the icons. The app is intended to be used during a phone conversation. What I've run into is that when a call is in operation and the app is launched, the screen is pushed down to make room the the green call in operation bar. Unfortunately this is causing the button names to be chopped off at the bottom of the screen. My thought is, when a call is detected, to either raise the toolbar and then lower it again after the call ends or hide and show the status bar. So, my question is, how do I detect when a call is in operation? Thanks for the help.
