RunRev Releases First Open Source Version of LiveCode
LiveCode 6.0 Follows Successful Kickstarter Campaign with More than £493,000 ($749,000) Raised to Create New Open Source Version of Mobile App Development Platform

EDINBURGH, UK – April 10, 2013 – RunRev today announced LiveCode 6.0, the first open source edition of the award winning rapid application development platform that allows anyone to create their own mobile and desktop apps. LiveCode 6.0 comes just five weeks after the close of one of the most successful Kickstarter campaigns ever, with RunRev raising nearly half a million pounds ($750,000) to fund the development of the next generation app development platform.

LiveCode 6.0 represents the company’s first Community Edition, free to anyone wanting to access the LiveCode engine for custom development of full-featured mobile and desktop apps. Educators, students and business professionals have put tremendous support behind the development of open source LiveCode, recognizing the platform’s ability to change the face of programming in learning and commercial environments.

“LiveCode going Open Source (free) is very exciting” said Cyril Pruszko, Computer Science Teacher/Tech Ed Teacher at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Maryland. “The free Community Edition removes all barriers to teaching programming using LiveCode.  No other language is as suitable to introducing students to real computer programing. It is easy to learn yet it contains many rich and powerful capabilities. It allows students to produce programs, games and even mobile apps within weeks. It is already in use in the corporate world. I can see LiveCode becoming a mainstream language in and out of school within the next few years.”

Summary of LiveCode 6.0
LiveCode 6.0 is released under the GPL3 license, which allows anyone interested in developing mobile apps to do so with the LiveCode Community Edition—provided users also release their app source code for public access. With its drag-and-drop interface and easy-to-learn English-like language, LiveCode puts the power of programming in the hands of students, business professionals and novice developers, regardless of their familiarity with programming.

LiveCode 6.0 offers immediate new features and benefits. RunRev is working on the broader, more extensive release for fall 2013 that includes a fully reworked and modularized engine. New features released today in LiveCode 6.0 include:
  • The first Community Edition open source version free to use and develop
Faster app performance due to reworked image handling and caching
Better workflow with autocomplete added to the message box
Enhanced productivity using the new Project Browser
Numerous feature updates and fixes added to enhance the user experience
RunRev CEO Kevin Miller said, “I’m so pleased we've been able to deliver this first release of LiveCode Community Edition just five weeks after the close of our Kickstarter campaign. By introducing the first open source version to the community we’re introducing significant new features that our customers have been asking for, all designed to improve productivity and workflow. For users new and old, LiveCode 6.0 is our most exciting release yet and will truly change the way people learn and establish careers around programming and development.”

LC 6.0 Omission or Bug

Noticed in LC version 6.0 there are no Icons for the Application or it's generated Stacks - only the Application and Stack title shows.

Is this intentional or a bug :?:

Hi Ralph,

I think you'll find that is a problem on yours and a few others machines - not everyones.

Can you let RunRev know what type of computer and OS version you are using - so they might be able to correlate data to help track down why this happens to some people.

Thanks for your Super Quick reply.

I'm on a PowerMac G5 running OS 10.4.11.

I'm not sure how to pass this on to the RunRev folks? - other than through this Forum.

I should also point out that I don't think OSX 10.4 is officially supported any more.

Sorry, a bit confused.

People that want to write commercial software have to dowbnload the community edition and then buy the license or have a specific download? And if they need a specific version what is the current version?

Thanks!

Hi Mag,
For me I have a specific link in my account for downloading the commercial version. I don't know the full depth of changes and would think that the licence "unlocks" something in the free version to allow passwords. But I'm probably wrong.

The current version is 6.0.1
