No need to wait: you can get started learning with LiveCode today with the 60-day trial; the first FOSS release will be available long before that 60 days is up.

It's fantastic to see that funding was successful, I was looking doubtful for a while. I've been using Livecode or revolution as I use and older version to do small little projects for a number of years. I wasn't in a position to upgrade since I just do small custom jobs for non-profits who can’t pay anything. Open Source live code will be a great help since I don’t need to distribute commercially. Well done to the folks at run rev.

The academies are great, but even with them you'll want to reinforce the learning with experimentation. Dive in, the water's fine.

What is the difference between the Open Source version and the $99.00 copy of LiveCode that I purchased? Primarily for iOS.

Do they offer the same feature?

If so then should I move to the Open Source version since it seems to be a newer version with more features.

For a definitive answer, check out the FAQ on the Community Project page:

However, the shortest answer is that if you publicly distribute or sell your application and do not want to give away the source code, then you must have a commercial license. You may use the community version for projects inside an organization without having to release the source code but the moment you want to distribute your app to anyone outside the source code must go with it or you must have a commercial license. Since you mentioned primarily iOS work, I do not believe, based on what I have read before, that Apple allows any GPL projects on the AppStore, so if you are distributing your app there you are required to use the commercial license.

Here is an answer @vox212, from RunRev on the "list" to a thread I created

"We are looking at providing a very simple OSS license specifically for
free, non-profit, not ad supported, non-promotional open source apps in
the Mac/iOS app store. We'll probably go down the route of charging a $25
administration fee to supply an open license that lets you do this for
apps you specifically name. We're still working through the legal
implications of this though as we have to be careful it doesn't undermine
the whole model by providing our platform binaries under a license without
the enforced freedoms in GPL that, while incompatible with the App store,
are also make our model work in all other contexts. More on this soon.

I am just wondering what happend with this open language Feature, you wrote in 2013 and Georgia Hutchings made an allusion in 2014 (https://livecode.com/lost-in-translation/). Unfortunately, I never heard something about it since. On the other hand, while reading the forum, it seems to be, that there are people here that are willing to localise LiveCode into other language as Spanish (550), French (80), German (100) or others. (The numbers given are millions people speaking this language as mother tongue.)

In 2013 I was told to open a tread in the IDE part of the forum, what I did (http://forums.livecode.com/viewtopic.php?f=67&t=15918). It is not a mass topic, put it appears regularly scattered across the forum again and again...
