Student written programs

Post by Newbie4 » Sat Jul 27, 2013 7:18 pm

I just uploaded a number of programs that were written by my high school students (ages 13 to 17) using LiveCode. They range from games (action games, mazes, edu. games, 2-player games) to apps (calculators, word processors, etc).

You are welcome to use them in your classes as examples and demos. You can have the students play with them and look at the code for learning purposes. It sometimes helps students get ideas for their own games.

To download them when in LiveCode, click on the "User Samples" icon in the top Toolbar. Then do a search on "high school" (all lower case, no quotes) to find them. Keep in mind that the students had deadlines and often changed their minds in the middle of their games. So they are not necessarily finished products. They were just means for them to learn programming concepts and actually create programs of their own to show and share with their friends.

I will be adding more over the next week to show different approaches, different ideas and other programming examples.

You are also welcome to visit the class website: http://www.tinyurl.com/erhs-lc for more examples and ideas for games. I will be adding more content and improving the lessons before school begins again soon.

(Sorry for the double post. I did not know where best to put this post) Thanks

If you are a teacher, here are some examples of programs that you could show your students for ideas or as examples of what they can do with LiveCode. Some of them may give you ideas for class assignments. Or you could show them relevant sections of code to illustrate how to do various actions in their games.

Or you could use these to learn LiveCode yourself - at their level.

I tried to segment them by categories of statements/actions/games

I had intended on putting more samples of my student's works on the LiveCode site but there is a file size limit. So some of the ones with great graphics never made it. Shaosean was kind enough to volunteer space, so I am putting them up at http://erhs.shaosean.tk .
I have put 43 games up there so far and there are more to come. They are very creative and fun to play.

Check them out for some ideas or just to learn how to do different things. You are free to download them to play and the LiveCode to see how they were done. Some of them will put a smile on your face.

Thank you. For many of the games, the LiveCode is also there so you are welcome to download it, modify it (slow it down?) or just see how it was done. I know that I have learned a lot by looking at other people's code and other examples (on this forum).

In fact, that is how the students learned many of those techniques - through research, reading and looking at other people's code. I did not teach them all those effects. They learned them on their own. That attests to the simplicity and ease of learning LiveCode. It is what makes it fun to teach LiveCode.
