Making Games with LiveCode Blog?

Post by smpcs » Mon Nov 04, 2013 12:45 pm

Hi,

I am thinking about starting a regular blog that will focus on making games with LiveCode. If I go ahead, it would be partially just for my own satisfaction.

But it will probably be more work than I imagine, and so I am wondering what level of interest there is? If there is lots then I am more likely to try and make it happen.

Note, the blog won't be about First Person Shooters, or the next Need For Speed clone as these do not play to the strengths of LiveCode.

More like "Indie" style games that keep things simple, to make them achievable. With graphics in 2D, (or 2.5D?) and a retro, classic feel. Hey, some may not use graphics (shock!) and be text based.

Are you interested in using LiveCode to make games?

I am just thinking about this, so any and all comments will be appreciated. Comments either way, whether "that's interesting", or "you'll be wasting your time" will be welcome and carefully tallied.

Scott.

Personally I think it's a great idea. A focussed location for ideas and info to do with LC Game dev.

As I'm already a published IOS game dev (HexThello - on App Store as mentioned in the LC Newsletter a few weeks back!), I can't really see that the idea can fail as long as there is a lot of updates and feedback from readers.

I'm sure I'll submit a couple of bits of info when the time comes too. ;)

Cheers,
Dave

Hi Scott. Sounds like a really good idea. As an aspiring LiveCode games developer myself it'd be useful to read your and others thoughts on game optimization, best practices etc.

I've also actually just started a dev blog focusing on the game I'm making with LC: http://jamieonkeys.tumblr.com/

Hi There,

Dave, great getting a game on the App store! A cool looking game that is already mentioned on the front page of the LiveCode Super Site. Do you mind me asking if you did your own icon for the App Store?

Jamie, looked at your Tripod game video, that looks like a clever idea for a puzzle game, and is well matched to LiveCode. I will look forward to watching the progress on your blog.

Being artistically and creatively challenged, I expect to concentrate on the programming side of making games. Not necessarily for mobile devices. Like some programmers I have a game idea or two that I think are (relatively?) original and hope to develop during 2014.

Thanks for the encouragement.

Hi,
Thanks. Yes, all the graphics, code and writing was done by myself. The icon was actually created in Photoshop only (using the 3D effects stuff). The other graphics were a combination of Sketchup and Photoshop. I tried to keep the colours bright and bold - though I think I may have overdone that aspect!.

One of the nice things about using LC for the idea creation is that you can make many games that will work perfectly on both the desktop and also HD tablets (phones are often too small a screen to cover too) without changing the code.

Cheers,
Dave
